Gaslit

This eight-part political thriller is an oblique take on the Watergate scandal and centres on the astonishing story of Martha Mitchell (played by Julia Roberts), the outspoken socialite wife of Nixon loyalist John Mitchell (an unrecognisable Sean Penn).

Julia Roberts (above) plays the outspoken socialite wife of Nixon loyalist John Mitchell in this eight-part political thriller

Martha was the subject of an extraordinary smear campaign by the Nixon camp when it was feared she knew too much.

Roberts is doing some of the best work of her brilliant career here but the entire cast, which also includes Shea Wigham (as an unhinged G. Gordon Liddy) and Betty Gilpin as the wife of key Watergate player John Dean (Dan Stevens), pull out all the stops.

StarzPlay, from Sunday

Shining Girls

A show that definitely rewards a rewatch. Indeed, a rewatch might actually be necessary.

Elisabeth Moss (above) plays Kirby Mizrachi, a newspaper archivist who survives attempted murder

Kirby Mizrachi (Elisabeth Moss) is an archivist for a newspaper. After surviving attempted murder she lives in a reality that is constantly and unpredictably changing. It means she’s often disorientated, and so are we the viewers.

The key to it all lies with the mysterious man (played by an incredibly creepy Jamie Bell), who has been keeping tabs on her since she was a little girl.

Reporter Dan Velazquez (Wagner Moura) is one of the few who doesn’t think she’s crazy and helps her to try to figure out what’s going on. Apple TV+, from Friday

The Mystery Of Marilyn Monroe: The Unheard Tapes

Superb documentary about the much-admired but troubled icon.

Using archive footage and previously unseen interviews, this superb documentary paints a vivid portrait of ill-fated star Marilyn Monroe (above)

It uses archive footage and previously unseen interviews with Monroe’s friends to paint a vivid portrait of the ill-fated star while musing on the reasons for her untimely death at the age of only 36. Netflix, from Wednesday

Ozark

The final seven episodes of the brilliant crime drama.

We still have no idea what will become of the Byrde family and whether they will pay the ultimate price for laundering money for a murderous drug cartel, or what will happen to their one time protegée Ruth Langmore who, at the end of the first half of this season, was a little, well, let’s just say overwrought.

Will they all survive? If Ozark has taught us anything, it is that death comes suddenly and out of nowhere. Netflix, from Friday

Grace And Frankie

The streaming giant’s longest-running original series is coming to an end.

Real-life old friends Jane Fonda (above, left) and Lily Tomlin (above, right) are on top form once again as the titular characters in Grace And Frankie

Real-life old friends Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin are on top form once again as the titular characters thrown together when their husbands declared their love for each other.

Watch out for a reunion of the 1980 movie 9 To 5 – the veteran stars are set to be joined by Dolly Parton before the show bows out. Netflix, from Friday

Prep To Win

This new three-part series takes rugby union fans behind the scenes at Harlequins as the squad prepares for a new season.

Among those participating are Marcus Smith, Danny Care, Louis Lynagh and Joe Marchant, who can be seen being put through their paces. Amazon, from Thursday

Remember Me

A wonderful cast and the stunning Yorkshire locations make an otherwise rather silly three-part mystery worth a look.

An elderly care-home resident becomes the focus of a series of bizarre incidents. Michael Palin plays him, alongside Jodie Comer and Mark Addy. BritBox, from Thursday

Liar

Both series of the psychodrama by Harry and Jack Williams, originally shown on ITV. Joanne Froggatt and Ioan Gruffudd play a teacher and a widowed surgeon whose first date takes an unexpected turn, with far-reaching consequences.

Zoe Tapper and Richie Campbell, who both now star in Grace, also appear. Netflix, from Monday

Prayers For The Stolen

Acclaimed Mexican drama from the producers of Roma which received a special mention at last year’s Cannes Film Festival.

It’s the coming-of-age story of three girls growing up in a village dominated by drugs and human trafficking. MUBI, from Friday

Ten Percent

What would be the point in remaking Call My Agent, the note-perfect French comedy about a talent agency dealing with financial troubles and difficult clients?

As it turns out, this British retread is pretty good. It’s recognisably a re-imagined version of the original but also its own thing.

And it has a great line-up of stars playing themselves, including Kelly Macdonald, Helena Bonham Carter and Olivia Williams. Amazon, from Thursday

Bosch

All seven seasons of the much-admired crime drama based on Michael Connelly’s series of novels, which is launching the newly renamed Amazon Freevee (formerly IMDb TV).

Titus Welliver plays the titular LAPD detective with a nose for trouble. Amazon Freevee, from Wednesday

Severance

In its first season this strange workplace drama has established itself as one of the great TV shows.

Directed by Ben Stiller and starring Adam Scott (above, left), the first season of this strange workplace drama has established itself as one of the great TV shows

Four employees at the mysterious Lumon Industries who have opted to undergo the radical ‘severance’ neurosurgery procedure – which means their work selves know nothing of their out-of-office selves – become dissatisfied with their lot and plan insurrection.

Be prepared for jaw-dropping twists and a nerve-shredding finale that is already passing into TV legend. Directed by Ben Stiller and starring Adam Scott. Apple TV+, available now
