BMW’s Upcoming R20 Spied. The 2-Liter Monster Went From Concept to Near-Production-Ready

Spy shots of BMW's R20 show that the concept bike is almost production-ready. All we need to know is whether it'll come in 'Hot Pink'.

If you saw BMW's R20 concept when it rolled out in Lake Como and held your breath in the hopes that it would one day become a production reality, it's time to breathe again. According to Speedweek, the R20 was recently spied testing out on some public roads, and it looks very close to being production-ready.

For those who don't know, the CEO of BMW Motorrad, Markus Flasch, rode the 'Concept R20' out onto a stage at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este in 2024. Most assumed this would be the same tale that befalls most concept machines, which is to say they would stay just that—concepts. Thankfully, BMW has determined that the R20 will have a different fate.

All Things BMW

What's just as impressive as this bike coming to life is that the near-production-ready version is very similar to the original concept. The headlight, handlebars, tank, and seat are all essentially the same, but some things had to change to make this model road-legal. BMW had to fit front and rear daytime running lights, and unfortunately, the beastly twin pipes lost some of their unruliness and now take the shape of an under-the-engine rooting system. But the bike hasn't lost too much of its raw appeal.

The compact yet burly silhouette owes a lot to the short single seat pressing the rider right up on the tank. But from the front, it's all down to that beastly boxer twin. BMW took the 1,800cc twin from the R18, added another 100cc to each cylinder, and stuffed it into the R20, which is where the bike gets its name from. In the R18, this engine only puts out 91 hp, so I wouldn't expect more than low triple digits in the R20. Torque is the name of the game, and without the added 200cc, this unit puts out a monstrous 120 lb-ft of pulling power; I dread to think what it'll be capable of once it's in the R20.

The air-cooled boxer is housed in a steel double-loop tubular frame, and there's a swingarm made of chrome-molybdenum steel and the Paralever strut made of aluminium to the rear. From the spy shots, we can see that it's rolling on Michelin Road 6 tires, but one of the few questions that remains unanswered is whether BMW will produce the R20 in the 'Hot Pink' color scheme that the concept wore. My money rests most of our questions being answered at EICMA, when I hope this bike will be officially revealed.
