What Is Ray Buchanan's Net Worth?

Ray Buchanan is a retired American professional football player who has a net worth of $6 million.

Nicknamed "Big Play Ray," Buchanan spent 12 seasons in the NFL as a cornerback and safety for the Indianapolis Colts, Atlanta Falcons and Oakland Raiders. He recorded 47 career interceptions, returned four interceptions for touchdowns and earned Pro Bowl and second-team All-Pro honors following the 1998 season.

Buchanan became best known during his seven seasons with the Falcons. His aggressive coverage, speed and outspoken personality made him one of the most recognizable players on the team that reached Super Bowl XXXIII. He intercepted seven passes during the 1998 regular season as Atlanta finished 14-2 and won the first NFC championship in franchise history.

During his career, Buchanan signed contracts with a combined potential value well above $50 million, including a six-year, $36 million extension with Atlanta. He earned roughly $33 million in actual NFL salary and bonuses before taxes, agent fees and other expenses. After retiring, he remained connected to the Falcons through alumni events and media appearances.

Early Life

Raymond Louis Buchanan was born on September 29, 1971, in Chicago, Illinois. He attended Proviso East High School in Maywood, where he became a multi-sport standout.

Buchanan played wide receiver, running back and safety in football and also excelled in track and field. As a senior, he won Illinois state championships in both the long jump and triple jump. His speed and jumping ability helped establish him as a high-level college football prospect despite concerns about his size.

University of Louisville

Buchanan enrolled at the University of Louisville expecting to play an offensive skill position. The coaching staff moved him to defensive back, where his athleticism, instincts and ability to make plays on the football quickly became apparent.

He played for the Cardinals from 1989 through 1992. Buchanan was named the defensive most valuable player of Louisville's victory over Alabama in the 1991 Fiesta Bowl, a landmark win for the program. By the end of his college career, he had developed into one of the country's better defensive back prospects.

Buchanan was later inducted into the University of Louisville Athletics Hall of Fame and added to the school's football Ring of Honor.

Indianapolis Colts

The Indianapolis Colts selected Buchanan in the third round of the 1993 NFL Draft with the 65th overall pick.

He made an immediate impact as a versatile defensive back and return specialist. In 1994, his second NFL season, Buchanan intercepted eight passes and returned three of them for touchdowns. That performance established the big-play reputation that followed him for the rest of his career.

Buchanan spent four seasons with Indianapolis. He was part of the Colts team that reached the AFC Championship Game following the 1995 season, falling one victory short of the Super Bowl.

Atlanta Falcons

Buchanan joined the Atlanta Falcons in 1997. The Falcons signed him to a four-year, $13 million contract that included a $4 million signing bonus, a major deal for a cornerback at the time.

He intercepted five passes during his first season in Atlanta. In 1998, Buchanan recorded seven interceptions and helped anchor a defense that complemented the Falcons' powerful rushing attack. Atlanta went 14-2, defeated the Minnesota Vikings in the NFC Championship Game and advanced to Super Bowl XXXIII.

The Falcons lost the Super Bowl to the Denver Broncos, but Buchanan's season earned him his first Pro Bowl selection and second-team All-Pro recognition.

Buchanan remained one of Atlanta's leading defensive players over the next several seasons. In 2001, the Falcons signed him to a six-year, $36 million extension that included an $8 million signing bonus, which was the largest signing bonus in franchise history at the time.

His 2002 season was interrupted by a four-game NFL suspension following a positive test for anabolic steroids. Buchanan said the result was caused by a nutritional supplement. The suspension cost him approximately $600,000 in salary.

Atlanta released Buchanan in 2004. He finished his Falcons career with 30 interceptions, placing him among the franchise's leading players in that category.

Oakland Raiders and Retirement

Buchanan signed a five-year, $11.36 million contract with the Oakland Raiders in April 2004. He moved from cornerback to free safety and started all 16 games during his only season with the team.

He recorded 92 tackles, six passes defended and one interception in 2004. Oakland released him before the 2005 season, bringing his NFL career to an end.

Across 12 seasons, Buchanan played in 181 regular-season games and made 161 starts. He finished with 47 interceptions, 827 interception-return yards, four defensive touchdowns, six fumble recoveries and more than 800 tackles.

Career Earnings

Buchanan earned approximately $33.2 million in NFL salary and bonuses. His largest deals came with the Falcons, including the four-year, $13 million agreement he signed in 1997 and the six-year, $36 million extension signed in 2001.

The face value of an NFL contract does not necessarily represent the amount a player ultimately receives. Buchanan was released before completing both his Atlanta extension and his Oakland contract. His gross earnings were also reduced by federal and state taxes, agent commissions, training costs and other professional expenses.

Personal Life

Ray was previously married to Sheree Buchanan. They had three children together: Destinee, Ray Jr. and Baylen. Sheree appeared on "The Amazing Race" while Ray was playing for Atlanta and later became a cast member of "Atlanta Exes."

Buchanan has continued to participate in Falcons alumni functions, fan events and retrospectives about the franchise's 1998 Super Bowl team. In 2016, he was inducted into the Kentucky Pro Football Hall of Fame.
