John Barrowman has blamed 'selfish' lockdown flouters in California for allowing 'devastating illness' to spread throughout the state.

The Scottish-American actor, 53, appeared on Lorraine today from his Palm Springs home, where he's currently staying so that he can shop and run errands for his parents John, 87, and Marion, 82, because they are shielding.

All individuals living in the State of California are currently ordered to stay home or at their place of residence, except for work, shopping or other essential errands.

He told that the rising number of cases in the state was because of 'people not following the rules' and said those people are preventing people from being able to work, and families from being reunited with each other.

The actor, 53, appeared on Lorraine today where he told that the rising number of cases in the state was because of 'people not following the rules'

'The devastation here with everyone getting sick is just because people are not following the rules,' John said.

'What get's me is everyone saying, "I want to do this, and I want to do that, and I want go out with friends".

'The more you do that, the more you keep us from what we actually want to do, because we're staying in and trying to fight this thing.

'It's stopping people going back to work, families not being able to meet, celebrate together - because some people are just being selfish and the bottom line is, wear a mask.'

The Scottish-American actor told host Christine Lampard (left)  is currently shopping and running errands for his parents John, 87, and Marion,64, as they are shielding at home

He claimed those not following the rules are preventing people from being able to work, and families from being reunited with each other

California has had 467,000 confirmed cases of the virus and 8,544 deaths, with cases drastically spiking in the months of June and July.

John revealed that he is doing everything he can to take care of his parents who are at greater risk of the virus because of their age and underlying health conditions.

He told: 'We've been pretty much locked in and locked down since the whole thing started, so we're coming into month five.

'My mum and dad who live down the street, I do all their grocery shopping. I'm taking my mum to the hospital tomorrow. She has to get an an injection for lady issues. I take her, mask myself up and head to the hospital with her.

The actor, pictured in London in March this year,  recently landed a role in BBC One drama Holby City, and revealed the show will soon be resuming filming

'I'm basically doing everything for them because I'm shielding them, they're not allowed to go out, because my mother has asthma and my father is 87.

'Trying to keep my father in once place, trying to keep him down is not easy, it's really not'.

The actor recently landed a role in BBC One drama Holby City, and revealed the show will soon be resuming filming, and were lucky enough to already have access to crucial PPE.

Speaking of resuming filming, he said: 'It was just question of them letting me know how they're running it.

'The one thing they do have on the set is hand santiser and masks, which was already there for filming anyway - so they're a step ahead of other productions.'
