iPhone users will be able to select a range of AI models for tasks across Apple’s operating system with iOS 27, such as writing text or creating images, Bloomberg reported.

The existence of the upcoming Extensions feature was previously reported in March, with the expectation that it would allow users to select multiple AI models to integrate into the Siri voice assistant, in the same way that ChatGPT currently does.

According to the new report, Extensions will also allow multiple third-party models to integrate with Writing Tools, Image Playground and other “Apple Intelligence” tools.

The move, which also applies to iPadOS 27 and macOS 27, is part of a strategy to turn Apple’s devices into a comprehensive AI platform, the report said.

Companies such as Google and Anthropic will reportedly be able to enable Extensions integration in their apps, making them available to users for integration.

ChatGPT already integrates with Siri by default to handle queries that are outside the capabilities of the base model.

The Extensions feature is separate from a deal between Apple and Google to use Google’s Gemini technology to power a revamped version of Siri.

Users will reportedly be able to choose different voices for various models, making it clear which one is responding to a query – for instance, using one voice for the Siri base assistant and another for ChatGPT.

These and other iOS 27 features are expected to be announced at Apple’s World Wide Developer Conference, starting on 8 June, and to be made available in the autumn – years after Apple first promised the Siri revamp.
