Lightning illuminated the sky across the Las Vegas Valley on Friday night, impacting the start of the high school football season for teams across Southern Nevada.

Nearly every game on the schedule during the first night of prep football was affected by the monsoon storms that swept through the area, whether it was delays, postponements or cancellations.

Per state rules, games cannot be played if there is a lightning strike within 10 miles of the school. Teams can return to the field if 30 minutes passes and there is not another lightning strike.

Bishop Gorman’s season opener against Losee started on time at 7 p.m. but was put under a lightning delay with 3:30 left in the first quarter and the Gaels leading 14-0.

The game eventually resumed but was halted at halftime with Gorman, ranked No. 1 in the Review-Journal’s preseason top 10 Southern Nevada rankings, up 41-0.

— Desert Oasis’s rivalry game against Sierra Vista was postponed to next Friday.

— The Chaparral-Bonanza game was canceled with Bonanza leading 10-7 in the second quarter. No word if it has been rescheduled.

— The Boulder City-Valley game was canceled just before halftime after starting on time at 6 p.m.

— Foothill and Green Valley at Foothill High School was canceled, school police announced. Fans at the Green Valley-Foothill game in Henderson were not allowed to enter the stadium as the 6 p.m. start time was pushed back several times.

— Spring Valley’s road game at Durango was postponed. The Grizzlies led 27-6 when the game was called. It is unclear if the game will be rescheduled.

— At Western High, Sunrise Mountain held a 32-0 lead over the Warriors at halftime, but the game was suspended due to lightning delay at the break.

— Faith Lutheran led Mater East 7-5 at the start of the second quarter. The game will be completed at 10 a.m. on Saturday.

— Centennial-Coronado was canceled.

For Bishop Gorman, the Gaels started three-star junior Ace Amina at quarterback over California transfer and Kansas commit Chance Thomas.

Amina threw a 11-yard touchdown to freshman Michael Blackmond and UNLV commit Azavier McDaniel had a interception returned for nearly 35 yards for a touchdown for the Gaels to give them a 14-0 lead.

Amina competed all three of his passes for 25 yards in the Gaels’ first offensive possession.
