Today's Connections follows an unorthodox pattern, creating pairings of words that don't make too much sense on paper. However, each phrase has an identity that can help put them together, either through how they are used artistically or other parts of a conformed appearance. Although the majority of subjects in the puzzle have to do with visuals tied to them, not everything is as it seems.
You only have four chances to make a mistake before losing a game of Connections, limiting your options as you play. The best advice for any day of Connections is to take your time to understand many possible contexts one phrase could mean besides what seems obvious. Similar to the Letter Boxed NYT puzzles, you have to find patterns to correctly discover the right path.
Today's Connections Category Hints August 14 #1161
The way some words are presented visually is the key theme of today's puzzle, with an idea of conformity driving other terms as well. Symbols, shapes, and colors are a big first step in categories here, as finding similarities in any of those ideas could lead toward the right answers. That being said, sound is also important, both as a literal concept and as something you can imagine visually like everything else.

WOLVERINE |
With new footage of Marvel's Wolverine having been released recently, WOLVERINE is a term I saw instantly when booting up today's puzzle. The classic black and yellow look of Wolverine's costume is a sharp visual identity, and one shared by CHARLIE BROWN and BUMBLEBEE characters from other media. With that visual look in mind, CAUTION TAPE is really the only term left that fits this pattern.

BUBBLE |
ECHO CHAMBER |
HIVEMIND |
SILO |
This category was harder to figure out in today's Connections, mainly because of how different it is compared to the other sections. The word HIVEMIND has few meanings outside collective thought, so ECHO CHAMBER makes sense to pair along with it. Thinking inside a BUBBLE also fits the theme, but SILO might not be a term you recognize in this category without making a mistake or two.

STRAIGHTEDGE |
Even if you have a rudimentary understanding of art, it's easy to assume that DIP PEN and INDIA INK pair together as drawing tools. By looking up the meaning of a BRISTOL BOARD, you'll discover how involved it is with creating comic books in general. With that knowledge, putting STRAIGHTEDGE in this part of the puzzle is only natural.

This category is also difficult to piece together at first, but sharp players might realize how the symbols used for GOOGLE DRIVE and DELTA AIRLINES are somewhat similar. The triangular shape of those logos can be applied to BASS ALE and CITGO as well, forming the last part of today's Connections without any issue.
