Manuel Demegillo is a writer at MovieWeb with recent experience at CBR, covering movie and TV news. A fan-first critic of sitcoms and serialized shows, he's old enough to have seen some of his favorites transition from appointment TV to streaming platforms. He used to keep a list of groundbreaking scenes in a journal of core memories (like when Locke and Boone discovered the Hatch in Lost). Always on the lookout for book-to-TV adaptations, he was ecstatic that Netflix had greenlit One Hundred Years of Solitude. He absolutely loves to cover anything pop culture, especially if it’s about massive franchises like Alien and the MCU.

Netflix's modern take on a classic story about the American frontier has won a following, thanks in part to the conversation it sparked after an impressive premiere. The show garnered high approval ratings on Rotten Tomatoes from critics (78%) and audiences (68%), and even the criticisms about its adaptation validate its sincere attempts to forge its own identity. It's a heartfelt drama that banks heavily on nostalgia, which is sadly now a rarity in modern TV. The reception has been positively overwhelming from new fans and those who grew up with the original series. That has spurred interest in the reboot that's now dominating the US and global streaming charts.

Little House on the Prairie took the top spot on the overall (TV and movie) US streaming chart one week after its premiere, according to Nielsen ratings. The series, which debuted all eight episodes simultaneously on Netflix, registered 1.18 billion minutes viewed from July 13–19, 27% higher than its July 9 premiere. The Big Bang Theory ranked at a close second place with 1.08 billion minutes. Little House on the Prairie also topped Nielsen's streaming original chart for the same period, beating The Hawk, Ride or Die, and The Five-Star Weekend.

Little House on the Prairie also registered 2.5 billion minutes viewed globally on Netflix from July 9-12, per the platform's internal metric. It's also the streamer's most-watched English show two weeks after the premiere, peaking at 3.9 billion minutes. It's currently ranked #7 after five weeks on the global Top 10, with 702 million minutes. It also peaked at #2 on the US Top 10 chart, where it stayed for four weeks. Netflix has a different method of ranking its TV shows, however. "Views" does not equate to actual viewers or minutes viewed — it's the total time spent watching the show, divided by the runtime. The platform measures performance using this metric, which prevents longer TV shows from having an unfair advantage over limited series.

That overwhelming reception can be attributed to the show's timely themes and updated narrative. As a reboot of the 1974 NBC TV series, Little House on the Prairie chose not to view the source material through rose-colored glasses. Unfortunately, that approach has also invited backlash. Showrunner Rebecca Sonnenshine dispels the criticism with a grounded but still sincere interpretation, stripping most of the sentimentality that defined the original. She took bold creative liberties by highlighting aspects of the story that were underrepresented in the books, and she also does not gloss over the harsh realities of frontier life. The reboot succeeds as a faithful, albeit grittier adaptation of Laura Ingalls Wilder's semi-autobiographical frontier saga.

Netflix's 'Little House on the Prairie' Is a Faithful Reboot of the 1974 Original

Little House on the Prairie follows the close-knit Ingalls family as they leave behind a comfortable life in Wisconsin to stake their claim on the Kansas frontier. The series is part family drama and part survival epic, primarily narrated by Laura Ingalls (Alice Halsey), the story's main protagonist. The reboot juxtaposes Laura's childhood wonder and optimism with the real-life dangers of the unsettled wilderness. It also depicts the Ingalls family as part of a larger and more diverse community, which is a significant improvement over the original series.

Sonnenshine ensured the reboot heavily focused on the Indigenous people whose lives were impacted by the Ingalls and the other pioneers, who drastically reshaped the cultural landscape with their arrival. The show brought in Osage actors and consultants to ensure their nation was accurately and properly represented. Sonnenshine also introduced the Mitchells into the overarching story to infuse the Osage perspective. The Mitchells paralleled the Ingalls and bridged the gap between their cultures.

Netflix's Little House on the Prairie is a great companion piece to the original show and to the novels. It retells the story with modern sensibilities, providing deeper context and a realistic perspective on frontier life. The reboot is a closer adaptation to Wilder's novels, which she wrote in her 60s during the Great Depression. Wilder deliberately recounted her family's struggle with warm nostalgia to inspire Americans who were at the time marginalized by economic collapse.
