Disney+ Version Of 24-Year-Old Fantasy Video Game Officially Announced

What started as an elevator pitch for a crossover game has become one of Disney Games Group's billion-dollar franchises — and with the recent success of video game movies based on Minecraft, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Super Mario Bros., it was always only a matter of time before Disney released its own adaptation. That being said, while this year's D23 dropped plenty of surprises, few expected Disney to announce that it's developing a TV show based on its beloved action RPG series.
A Kingdom Hearts animated TV show is in the works for Disney+ and the Disney Channel. Developed with creator Tetsuya Nomura and game developer Square Enix, the series will feature a brand-new story that will expand on the Kingdom Hearts universe, but it's also expected to feature characters from the video games. A sneak peek teased a back profile of a keyblade wielder, but he doesn't look like Sora, the main protagonist of the video game series.
The as-yet-untitled TV show appears to be a spin-off adaptation, because Nomura took to X shortly after the announcement and told Kingdom Hearts fans to "let your imaginations run wild." The franchise spans 13 mainline games released across multiple platforms, with two more titles in development (Square Enix announced that Kingdom Hearts IV is scheduled to launch in late 2027). The lore has also expanded well beyond the original 2002 installment, so hopefully the TV show keeps the story simple and accessible for casual viewers.
The premise of Kingdom Hearts is straightforward enough. The story follows Sora, a sword-wielding boy who teams up with classic Disney characters such as Donald Duck and Goofy to fight creatures of darkness and protect the power of friendship. Their quests take them through various worlds populated by Disney and Pixar characters. Beyond that, it's a dense mythology involving complex time travel rules and alternate versions of characters.
The first Kingdom Hearts game was conceived in the late 1990s, when a Square developer reportedly pitched a crossover idea to a Disney executive in an elevator. Nintendo dominated the video game market at the time, and Square wanted to make a game that could compete with Super Mario 64. Nomura also wanted an open-world action RPG with instantly recognizable characters, and thought Disney's roster fit the bill.
Kingdom Hearts was released in 2002 for the PlayStation 2. A pilot for a TV adaptation was commissioned for the Disney Channel the same year, but didn't move forward with a series order. Director Seth Kearsley uploaded the storyboards for that pilot on YouTube in 2022, and said the show was scrapped because Square Enix planned to make more games, and the TV series wouldn't be able to keep up with the expanding lore. It seems like Disney made the right call by focusing on an entirely original story in the upcoming adaptation.
