A Canadian transgender activist once praised by former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's government is facing fierce backlash after posting a chilling public message that appeared to reveal the location of author J.K. Rowling's private yacht.

Morgane Oger — a controversial figure in the  LGBTQ+ advocacy world — sparked outrage after tracking Rowling's yacht near Vancouver and inviting the author to a 'chit chat' in what many are calling a thinly veiled threat.

'Billionaire boating bigots prefer trans-inclusive vacationing spots such as British Columbia. Am I right, @jk_rowling?' Oger wrote. 

'Enjoy our hospitable province, don't forget to tip, but maybe don't stay too long. Stop by English Bay and come for drinks or a bbq if you'd like a chit chat between just us yachties.'

The message, tinged with both sarcasm and hostility, immediately triggered a wave of condemnation online.

'This is stalker behaviour. Leave her alone,' one user wrote.

Another misgendered Oger as a 'sad little man' while saying her action was 'beyond creepy.' 

'I'm sure giving someone's location online is illegal,' a third person said.

'She's very welcome here, and this is creepy doxing-like behaviour, proving many of her opinions that you hate her for,' a fourth added.

Critics accused Oger of engaging in dangerous intimidation and potential doxxing just for the crime of holding dissenting views on gender identity. 

Rowling, a vocal supporter of women's sex-based rights, has long been targeted by transgender activists for her stance that biological sex is real and relevant in law and society.

The uproar stands in stark contrast to the accolades Oger has previously received from Canadian leaders. 

In December 2023, Oger was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, one of Canada's highest civilian honors, in recognition of her work advancing legal protections for transgender Canadians. 

She was celebrated at the time as a 'champion of diversity' whose efforts helped change national and provincial laws.

'Her courage, vision and perseverance have helped redefine the fundamental issue of equality and have advanced inclusiveness for gender-diverse Canadians,' the award citation stated.

It the time, Oger was delighted with the award telling media, 'It feels really, really, really nice. We don't live in a day and age where medals come about very often, and the campaign to bring equality still has a lot of road ahead of us.'

But her track record has also been marred by controversy especially among Canadian feminists and women's groups.

In 2019, Oger spearheaded a successful campaign to strip Vancouver Rape Relief  Canada's oldest rape crisis shelter of city funding because it refused to admit transgender women. 

The shelter, which serves female victims of male violence, argued that it could not adequately support those who hadn't experienced life as girls and women.

'We do not have the experience to offer services to people without the same life experience… this is not our work,' the shelter stated. 

Nonetheless, Vancouver City Council voted to yank its $34,000 grant unless the shelter changed its policy. 

'Trans women are women and sex work is work. Trans women and sex workers deserve care and protection… I can't support orgs who exclude them,' Councilor Christine Boyle declared at the time.

Oger, speaking before council, said the shelter's exclusion of trans women violated the city's inclusion criteria.

Following the funding decision, the shelter was hit by waves of vandalism. 

'Kill TERFS, trans power,' was scrawled on its windows, and a dead rat was nailed to the door. 

Oger denounced the attacks as regrettable, but blamed the shelter for provoking them.

The shelter blasted Oger's campaign as 'discrimination against women in the name of inclusion,' and warned the city it was attempting to coerce them into abandoning core principles.

That same combative energy is what critics say underlies Oger's post about Rowling's yacht. 

While Rowling is no stranger to threats and vitriol, including death threats, the public revelation of her real-time location has many stunned.

Oger's comment invited Rowling to 'come for drinks' was interpreted by many as taunting rather than genuine hospitality.

There is no indication Rowling has responded publicly to the post.
