It’s been a long, hot summer so far and, if you’re anything like me, your wardrobe has probably struggled to keep up. I’ve been washing my white linen trousers on repeat and rotating the same handful of office-appropriate dresses in a bid to stay cool.

With the warm weather showing little sign of easing up, I decided it was time to refresh my summer wardrobe - but I didn’t want to spend a fortune. Surprisingly, the answer lay in an unlikely place: the supermarket.

Yes, every look I’m wearing here has come from the clothing aisles of Asda, Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Morrisons. 

Today, there’s no stigma attached to shopping there. Any fashion-conscious woman will tell you that supermarket fashion is a revelation, offering designer-looking pieces at a fraction of the price.

So I’ve combed through the latest collections to find the standout pieces that are heatwave-ready, for you to pick up on your weekly shop.

Starting with dresses, Tesco’s F&F Edit range has produced a winner in the form of a strappy chocolate-brown maxi (22.50). The sheer mesh overlay skims the body, making it the perfect choice for balmy evenings.

Morrisons wouldn’t usually be my first stop for occasionwear, but this spot-print maxi genuinely surprised me. The adjustable straps and floaty tiered silhouette make it ideal for warm weather, while the oversized polka dot print has a distinctly high-fashion feel. At just £22, it’s a sophisticated choice for summer parties.

If you prefer separates, this peach co-ord from F&F (£45.50) is another standout. The soft hue looks particularly flattering against sun-kissed skin, while the elegant flared silhouette elevates it from supermarket to super-chic.

Co-ords are also one of the easiest ways to look polished with minimal effort. This geometric set from F&F could easily be mistaken for a Reiss set I’ve been eyeing up, but rather than the £290 price tag, it comes in at just £40.50. Smart enough for the office while relaxed enough for drinks in a pub garden, it’s one of my favourite finds.

Jeans are the first thing I abandon when temperatures rise, opting instead for loose-fitting trousers like this lightweight barrel-leg pair from George (£35). There’s no thigh rub or risk of a Marilyn Monroe moment in a sudden breeze and, teamed with the brand’s cropped crochet top, it makes for an effortless festival-ready look.

I’m usually a bikini girl, but recently I’ve found myself gravitating towards swimsuits. I love Hunza G’s signature crinkle styles but, with prices starting at £170, they’re a significant investment for a garment you only wear a handful of times a year. Thankfully, George at Asda has created a remarkably similar version for just £18, complete with a flattering low scoop back. Pair it with Tu’s ultra-wide striped trousers (£20) and George’s rust-coloured straw tote (£14) and you have an easy beach-to-bar outfit.

 A good vest top is another summer essential, and this bright red version from Tu (£16) is embellished with fun sun-shaped buttons. For extra style points, embrace colour-clashing and pair it with the green checked hanky-hem skirt, currently reduced to £12 in the sale.

And finally, footwear. Sainsbury’s gets my vote for the strongest selection this season. My standout pair has to be the jewel-detail sandals (£20). I’ve been wearing mine non-stop and can confidently say they’re among the comfiest shoes I own, while still looking stylish. And on my next visit? I plan to snap up a pair of bright red jelly sandals (£7), which add a playful pop of colour to any summer outfit.
