New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced a lottery giving away 2,100 free Broadway tickets to New York City high school students, in partnership with the nonprofit Theatre Development Fund

Mr. Mamdani said Thursday that any student in grades nine through 12 across the five boroughs can enter the lottery by Monday, with winners able to claim up to two tickets each.

A mayoral spokeswoman said the city isn’t paying for the tickets — the participating shows are donating them.

Students who miss the lottery deadline can still register for the free membership through Sept. 17, though they won’t be entered in the drawing.

Seven shows are participating, including “Buena Vista Social Club,” “The Great Gatsby” and “Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York).” Signing up for the lottery also gives students a free two-month TDF membership, which offers discounted tickets and access to museums and other cultural institutions.

Mr. Mamdani described the giveaway as extending City Hall’s summer lottery efforts — previously focused on sports events — to theater as part of his broader push to make the city’s culture accessible to young people.
