Machete-wielding man arrested after flashbang ends standoff with west suburban police

A man who allegedly threatened two employees of the west suburban apartment building he lives in with a machete was arrested after a standoff with police that spanned several hours on Wednesday.
Around 2:03 p.m., police responded to a 911 call that a man was using the knife in “a threatening way” outside an apartment building on the 300 block of North Charles Avenue in Naperville, authorities said.
Responding officers learned that a resident of the building, 35-year-old Daniel O’Neill, allegedly threatened two building employees with a machete. The two employees ran into the building and hid in a maintenance room, police said. O’Neill then allegedly chased after them and tried to break into the room where they were hiding by hitting it with the knife.
When he wasn’t able to get into the maintenance room, O’Neill then locked himself in his apartment for several hours and refused to respond to several attempts from police to contact him, authorities said.
Officers trained in crisis negotiations then came to the scene and were soon joined by Naperville police’s Special Response Team.
Police tried for several hours to negotiate with O’Neill before putting a tactical plan into place, authorities said. The plan involved deploying a drone into the apartment, which O’Neill allegedly disabled before throwing it out a window.
After several hours of unsuccessful attempts to negotiate with O’Neill, a tactical plan was put into place. As part of that operation, police deployed a drone into the apartment. O’Neill allegedly disabled the drone and threw it from an apartment window. Officers ultimately deployed a flashbang device into the apartment and O’Neill exited the building and was arrested.
He is now facing charges of criminal damage to government supported property for damaging the drone when it was thrown out the window, two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, reckless conduct, criminal damage to property and disorderly conduct.
