(LifeSiteNews) — Major donors are pouring millions of dollars into the abortion movement’s war chest as the activists prepare for a series of key ballot measures in the November midterms – and pro-lifers are warning that money may make the difference in key races.

In Idaho, abortion activists hope that Reproductive Freedom and Privacy Act Initiative (Proposition 1) will create a statutory right to abortion until “fetal viability,” the point at which babies can survive outside the womb – but with vague exceptions for “medical emergencies that could permit abortion up until birth.” This would overturn Idaho’s strict pro-life laws. Proposition 1 would also enshrine the right to contraception and IVF.

Pro-life groups have fundraised over $1.6 million for the fight, and several groups are already pounding the pavement; the abortion activists behind Proposition 1 are close behind with $1.1 million raised thus far, including donations from actors Jamie Lee Curtis and Christopher Guest. 

In Nevada, where abortion is already legal until 24 weeks, the Right to Abortion Initiative (Question 6) will be on the ballot. Question 6 would amend Nevada’s constitution to establish a right to abortion, barring legislators from restricting abortion except after fetal viability (an attempt to initiate a ballot question on protections for the pre-born failed). Virginia’s Right to Reproductive Freedom Amendment (Question 1) seeks a nearly identical outcome. 

According to the Nevada Independent, Nevadans for Reproductive Freedom had raised over $800,000 by July: “Nevadans for Reproductive Freedom’s haul this cycle includes six-figure checks from a national Planned Parenthood affiliate, a prominent Bay Area Democratic donor and a group founded by Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker.” Meanwhile, their opponents – the PAC Protect Our Girls – raised only $10,000 this quarter.

The Virginia abortion battle is similarly lopsided when it comes to war chests, with Virginians for Reproductive Freedom raking in $1.62 million (more according to other sources) over against $114,000 for the opposition.

In Missouri, pro-lifers have put forward Amendment 3, which would repeal the 2024 voter-approved constitutional amendment that enshrined the “right” to abortion up until fetal viability. Amendment 3 would largely outlaw abortion (with exceptions for medical emergencies and sexual assault) and require parental consent for minors seeking abortion and ban sex-change surgeries for children. 

Sex-change surgeries for minors are already illegal in Missouri, and the ban was upheld by the Missouri Supreme Court in January. Amendment 3 would put this ban in the state constitution, further strengthening the law.

The results of the 2024 referendum were very close, with about 52 percent of Missourians voting in favor of enshrining a right to abortion; pro-lifers hope that another referendum might put them over the top. The abortion activist campaign to stop the Amendment 3 effort has already kicked into high gear, with former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg donating $1.25 million to the effort (he previously donated $1 million to the 2024 effort).

According to Politico, the abortion campaign has already raised over $6.5 million; in contrast, the primary group backing Amendment 3, the Her Health, Her Future PAC, has raised just over $1 million. Amendment 3 is supported by Gov. Mike Kehoe; his wife, Missouri First Lady Claudia Kehoe, “serves as the PAC’s treasurer.”

“Other top donors to Stop the Ban include the members of the PAC’s coalition, including the ACLU of Missouri, the Fairness Project, Planned Parenthood Great Plains Votes, Planned Parenthood Great Rivers Action, Abortion Action Missouri, PROMO and Beacon Reproductive Health Network,” Politico reported. “Tom Bastian, a spokesperson with the campaign, said Stop the Ban has also received donations from Missourians in more than 50 of the state’s 114 counties.”

In 2024, abortion activists outspent pro-life groups 10 to one, with Missourians for Constitutional Freedom raising over $31 million. 

“I think if some of the larger pro-life donors would have known how close it would have been, we would have gotten some of the bigger checks, but we didn’t get any of the bigger checks,” one pro-life activist said. “Because a lot of people thought that it was going to be impossible, that we were going to lose by a lot. And it was sad to lose. It was even sadder to lose knowing that, had we had some more resources, we probably could have won.”
