DC Comics might have the Absolute Universe, but Marvel has its Ultimate line. The imprint originally began in 2000, with Ultimate Spider-Man acting as the headliner. While that reality evolved across the years, its popularity rose and fell and rose again. Eventually, the Ultimate Universe was scrapped, with characters like Miles Morales folded into Earth-616 and reality itself destroyed. So, when it was announced that Marvel would be reviving the Ultimate Universe, readers were interested in seeing how the reality would come about again.

The new Ultimate Universe is one that has been forged in the image of The Maker, a survivor of the original Ultimate Universe and the major antagonist of the run. Much like those early days, Ultimate Spider-Man led the way for a new era, with Ultimate Wolverine, Ultimate Black Panther, The Ultimates, Ultimate Spider-Man: Incursion and Ultimate X-Men forming the backbone of the new reality. Designated as Earth-6160, there is an argument to be made that this alternative Earth is already better than Earth-616, and yet there are still stories to tell.

For too long, Marvel's readers have been bogged down in endless continuity, long-term ongoing storylines, and ever-changing character arcs. Of course, there were first issues to enjoy, limited series, and compelling crossover events. However, it felt as if everything needed to go back to basics for a moment, with a bit of a reset needed. While Marvel's Earth-616 still searches for its key identity after the spectacular One World Under Doom event, it would seem that the Ultimate Universe has already provided the clarity and precision that many were searching for. It is, after all, a fresh start for many and one that can be kept up with.

The publishing scheme around the Ultimate Universe is pretty clear. There's a set number of titles to read, a clear endgame and an excellent array of leading characters to follow. Within that range there may be differences in the storytelling and art styles, Ultimate X-Men acting as a particular standout, but the Ultimate line nonetheless feels cohesive in its direction. It's taking place around the same time, it's heading in the same direction, and the consequences of a character's actions feel valued in another run. Simply put, this is a shared universe that can be in lockstep from the very beginning. The Ultimate Universe has been given plenty of praise, which has only boosted its popularity. The positive word of mouth has genuinely had an impact, because new readers feel the run is accessible. Even newcomers to Marvel don't need decades of experience with this world. Simply put, they can jump in from the very beginning knowing that they will not be too out of touch with what's going on. For those veterans of the comic world, it's fun to see these origins renewed. While those starter stories may feel familiar, it's the way that the Ultimate Universe has twisted its premise right up until its end that makes it all the more compelling.

With the heroes of Earth seemingly removed from the timeline, the Ultimate Universe demonstrates that somehow, these things always find a way to return. With classic heroes forced back into their personas and new vigilantes debuting, their fight against a fascist regime is what drives the conflict of the piece. This is nothing like the original Ultimate line, therefore, which elevates the concept further. These are not disparate origin stories and character introductions designed to simply shake up the status quo. Every character involved in this story is deliberately chosen and designed with a purpose. One that readers know will eventually be fulfilled.

Marvel's Ultimates' Deadline Created Sincere Tension

Earth-616, by its nature, will continue spinning its wheels. It will never fully be reset again; it certainly won't come to an end, and for as long as Marvel's publishing division survives, Earth-616 is at the heart of all of those plans. That's okay, though; every brand needs its main attraction, and that is Earth-616 in this case. However, what Earth-616 does not feature is a continuous-shared endgame that continuity is always building to. Of course, there are those crossover tales and specific eras in the comics, but because there is no end in sight for this reality, there is never an overarching narrative that can constantly be touched upon.

The Ultimate Universe, by comparison, does have that luxury. Because throughout the main thrust of the universe's stories, there is one deadline that is fast approaching and that is The Maker's return. Throughout The Ultimates and some of its spinoff tales, audiences are reminded of how long the Ultimate Universe has existed for in this form and how long until The Maker might make his grand return. Everything is on a deadline. Everyone is up against the clock. The heroes of this new reality are fighting to make meaningful change before it is simply all too late.

Earth-616 would never be able to take this approach to its storytelling. Even if a huge portion of its comics were tied up in some kind of shared narrative, there would still be narrative complications because of the scope and scale of this universe and all the runs included within it. It would also all be for nothing. This is considering that, no matter what happens, the status quo will eventually be reverted to again anyway. With the Ultimate Universe, there is freedom there. No one knows what will happen next, and with the Universe's end coming about, it is clear that all of that build-up was certainly worth it.

It's interesting to note that Marvel is already keen to revisit the Ultimate Universe in multiple ways, and that the story still isn't concluded. But no matter what comes next for this reality, what is evident is that readers are really engaged, because there is a much larger-scale story overlapping all of those micro, personal arcs. By taking this approach, readers can't help but feel that everything matters. On Earth-616, there's a need for throwaway stories without big stakes. But for those who want something far more focused, with tension throughout, the Ultimate Universe has the structure to support that.

The Universe's Creative Freedom Is Inspiring The Future

There is another reason that the Ultimate Universe has surpassed Earth-616 in many respects, and that comes down to the creative freedom that it has been afforded. Earth-616 is bound by its need to satisfy sales, combined with its massive fan base and never-ending continuity. There are lots of plates to spin at any given time, and certain creative decisions will be limited by what's come before or what is being planned elsewhere. Again, it's an exciting challenge for any writer or artist to navigate, but it is one that both props up Earth-616 and hampers it, in some examples.

For the Ultimate Universe, by comparison, the sandbox is free to play in. New characters can be introduced, massive risks can be taken, and shocking moments can unfold. In the original Ultimate Universe, Marvel took too many liberties with that idea. Some of the company's most infamous narratives involved moments of disgust just for the sake of challenging readers. Because Earth-616 couldn't make any of those choices, Marvel felt as though the Ultimate Universe was the right place for them. However, this version of the Ultimate Universe is much more thoughtful in its use of that freedom.

Every twist serves both the characters and the stories, leaning towards that endgame that has been teased throughout. But it's so much more than that. Because on an individual level, these comics have allowed the creatives to ignore the continuity of Earth-616 entirely, creating something bold and satisfying. Ultimate Spider-Man is the best example of this, with fans feeling as though this iteration of Spider-Man is far superior to the Peter Parker that has been featured in the main continuity as of late. The Ultimates are also a breath of fresh air compared to The Avengers.

All of this is going on to influence the future of Marvel's publishing plans. The Ultimate Universe's return is one part of that. The debut of the Midnight Universe is another instance of Marvel learning a lot from this run and from its readership and heading in another unexpected direction again. Who knows how that continuity will compare to Earth-616, but at the very least, it will be unlike anything readers have seen thus far. That's what makes this universe so addictive. Even if fans think they've seen it all before, there is room to still sidestep into a beat that ultimately adds to a rich tapestry.
