17 Lazy-Cook Shortcuts That People Swear Taste Like You Put In Way, Way, Way More Effort“I went to culinary school and worked at 5-star restaurants. It’s still a staple in my house.”
I love a home-cooked meal made from scratch, but I don't often have the time or energy at the end of the day to make magic in the kitchen. That's why I like to keep a few shelf-stable mixes and boxes on hand as a shortcut to whipping up something tasty in a hurry. Recently, home cooks on Reddit shared their favorite mixes and tips for doctoring them up to make them extra special, and now I need to try every last one of them. Here's what people shared:
1.
"I was in a southern lady’s home and had the BEST cornbread. I had been trying to find a good recipe for years. I was ready to beg and plead for her recipe. She laughed and said it was Jiffy, just prepared like the box instructions, and added a half cup of sour cream. Then drizzle honey on top after it’s baked while it’s still warm. That was it. And now I bake the perfect cornbread."
2.
"As an avid cook, I hereby admit my box of shame to be Stove Top Stuffing, chicken flavor."

"I crush this up and use it like breadcrumbs on the tops of casseroles. Drizzle a little butter on there in the last few minutes of cooking; it's unreal."

3.
"Near East Couscous! So versatile, not too salty or 'processed' tasting. And the couscous takes literally 5 minutes. Several flavors, all excellent, as well as plain. Way 'fancier' than rice for company, tons less work, and always comes out perfect, no worries about doneness. They also have Rice Pilaf, which tastes great, but it's not as fast/easy."
10.
"Japanese curry cubes. I've never made a curry from scratch, so I can't really judge it, but I use those little cubes constantly. I'll use it as a gravy substitute, in a curry, with egg noodles and meatballs, in a pot pie, and more."

"A few Hamburger Helper options are better than they need to be."
13.
"The King Arthur Buttermilk Pancake Mix (which you just add water to) is phenomenal. I get compliments every time I make pancakes with it, and it’s pretty much all we use now."
15.
"I have a gluten sensitivity and rarely eat sweets. Most of my family has the same sensitivity. For birthdays, I often make King Arthur’s Gluten-Free Chocolate Cake Mix. Many people have told me it’s one of the best chocolate cakes they’ve ever had. It takes less effort than anything else I cook or bake."
17.
And finally, "Bisquick was a staple in my house growing up. Pancakes, waffles, biscuits, batter for deep frying, and dredging. I went to culinary school and worked at 5-star restaurants. Bisquick is still a staple in my house."
