Nathan Hale Homestead calls descendants of Hale family home for celebration of America 250

Connecticut’s own Nathan Hale is remembered as America’s first spy during the Revolutionary War, and is regarded as an American patriot.
There is a call to bring his family home to celebrate the nation’s 250th birthday this year.
“This is the only actual image there is of Nathan Hale… it’s a shadow portrait,” said Anne Marie Charland, Museum Administrator of the Nathan Hale Homestead.
Charland showed off the home, now a museum, and talked about the history of Connecticut’s state hero.  
The farmstead is nestled in the woods in Coventry and stands proudly as a piece of Connecticut and American history.
The farmstead was the one Nathan Hale grew up on.
He was a Yale graduate, and a schoolteacher by trade, starting at a schoolhouse in East Haddam before landing in New London. His teaching legacy is one of inclusion, educating young women in his schoolhouse from 5 a.m. to 7 a.m. before the boys came in for a day of school.
When the Revolutionary War began, he was under contract as a schoolteacher so couldn’t join the fight, but stayed involved in politics locally, according to Charland. When the war effort grew, he joined in. A call went out in the Fall of 1776 from General George Washington in need of a spy to head behind enemy lines.
“Only one person steps forward, and that was Nathan Hale,” Charland said.
Unfortunately, only 10 days into the mission, he was captured and executed. His famous final words etching themselves into history: “I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country.”
“We really honor this young man that stepped forward when no one else would,” Charland said.
It’s those words and a legacy that have been cemented here in Connecticut, and now, experts on site at the homestead are calling the family home not just to celebrate America’s birthday, but also to celebrate the completion of the homestead as well, which was also finished in 1776.
“Nathan was one of 10 children that survived to adulthood,” Charland said.
That means there is a large family tree that extends widely across the country.
The museum is putting out a nationwide call for descendants of the family to return to Coventry on September 19. They estimate about 40 are coming already, but hope as word spreads, more will return as well.
“We have a lot of people that like to see the line back to the Hale family,” said Charland.
She explained it’s almost weekly that people visit the homestead claiming a connection to the Connecticut hero.
The gathering serves as a chance to bring Hale descendants together at a time the nation will be celebrating its 250th birthday.
“What better time to bring everyone together and have a big celebration, celebrating this patriotic family,” Charland said.
