It's fun to find TTRPGs that emulate a specific style of storytelling, and these are certainly comparable to Studio Ghibli's output.

Studio Ghibli films are celebrated for their gorgeous coming-of-age stories, their brilliant character arcs and stunning animation. Many of their films are conflict-averse and celebrate a cozier style of storytelling. Of course, there are big stakes and major battles when the time comes, but there is also a whimsicality to many of the studio's films that have helped to define its voice and style. It's no wonder that fans want to spend as much time as possible exploring all of these worlds.
Unfortunately, there is not a direct Studio Ghibli-themed tabletop roleplaying game for fans to enjoy. While a title like this should be able to transport them into that landscape, instead, fans are looking for alternatives that may be able to present that same atmosphere. Luckily for them, there are a couple of great options to choose from that not only celebrate the genre but give players plenty of freedom to create the cozy, whimsical narratives that remind them of those big-screen adventures.
Dungeons & Dragons Can Form The Basis For Any Tone & Tale

It's difficult to discuss roleplaying games without looking to Dungeons & Dragons for guidance. The Wizards of the Coast-owned property is the forefather of all other RPGs and, because of the depth of the system and its mechanics, many other titles have been built on the back of those rules. Dungeons & Dragons has also played host to a range of other properties, both official and otherwise. So while Stranger Things and Rick & Morty might have proper modules, one could also create a Studio Ghibli-inspired piece.
So it is true that one could take the role of Dungeon Master and create a campaign and world, using the structure of Dungeons & Dragons, that entirely replicates Studio Ghibli's cinematic universe. However, there is also something to be said about the crossover between the two franchises. Dungeons & Dragons can be everything at once, and whether it's the magical world of Spirited Away or the conflict of gods seen in Princess Mononoke, many of D&D's own arcs follow similar patterns,
What Studio Ghibli and Dungeons & Dragons are so good at is taking the basis of classic tales and forging them into something new. But there is a sense of familiarity forming the basis of each story, because it is one that has been told again and again, each time with new wrinkles. Those that really understand the humor, whimsical spirit and core themes of friendship and love that one might find in Dungeons & Dragons will be able to see such a clear connection between the properties.
Discworld Adventures Showcases The Whimsy Of Terry Pratchett's Work

Although Terry Prachett's work on Discworld and Studio Ghibli's filmography have almost no links, there is a great deal of commonality between the two. Both rely heavily on humor, both are inspired by niche cultural references that are shaped by the respective nations where those stories hail from, and both utilize whimsicality in spades. It's fair to say that Pratchett and the animation studio see the world in a rather similar fashion and that translates well to the TTRPG.
It was Modiphius who created the Discworld Adventures RPG, with Adventures in Ankh-Morpork acting as the starting point for the title. The game welcomes players into Discworld, the incredible shared universe where the majority of Pratchett’s novels take place. Whether players take on a familiar character from the books or create someone of their own liking, the RPG is flexible and produces a good-enough creation suite to give players that comfortable freedom.
The game's mechanics are able to make the most of Pratchett’s storytelling style, with the chaotic nature of his novels bleeding into the player's own campaigns. For those who love Studio Ghibli movies, there's a sense of familiarity here, as world-building is put first and foremost and the most plain and ordinary of people are celebrated.
Ryuutama: Natural Fantasy Roleplay Is All About The Journey

Created by Japanese designer Atsuhiro Okada, visually Ryuutama: Natural Fantasy Roleplay looks as though it could be a future Studio Ghibli project. It is gorgeous in its artwork and effortless in its spirituality, as it focuses on the most absurdist and whimsical imagery it can seemingly muster. This is a story about ordinary people in an extraordinary world. The players in Ryuutama could be NPCs unto themselves, because of the way they lead regular lives.
While there are quests and paths to follow, this is not a TTRPG that celebrates great heroes and incredible feats. Rather, this is a game that sees players exploring the world, moving from town to town in low-conflict settings. It's warm and friendly and uses a set of mechanics that are so light and simple that anyone can pick up and play the game. Compared to the density of Dungeons & Dragons or some other comparable text, this is a breeze.
Whether players are a hunter, a farmer, a healer or perhaps a merchant, they'll find themselves engaging in the kinds of arcs that Studio Ghibli's characters are compelled by. When combat does occur, it is fun and so often puzzle-based, while the creativity seen in Studio Ghibli's output is on full display in the way players are encouraged to help create these towns alongside the Games Master. For those veterans of the genre, this is one that changes the stakes entirely.
Wanderhome Is As Cozy As It Is Compelling

Designed by Jay Dragon and published via Possum Creek Games, Wanderhome is easily one of the most inviting and beautiful TTRPGs that this writer has ever seen. The title attempts to create a feeling of community here, its mission not too dissimilar to Studio Ghibli in their desire to celebrate friendship and togetherness. While it might look whimsical on the surface, and it certainly is, Wanderhome is also able to create stories with sincere emotional levity.
Wanderhome is set in a world that is recovering from war and so there is some trauma and despair to navigate there. But in the wake of such destruction, it seems new life is emerging and players get to see dramatic new vistas, as they play the part of traveling animal folk and mystical creatures. This is a game with pacifism at its core too, much like Studio Ghibli, which means violent choices aren't really an option to make.
The mechanics do not rely on traditional dice setups either. Rather, players are met with a narrative-first experience, with a token economy and straight-forward resource books helping to guide the way. Any fan of Studio Ghibli will be able to see that the animation company could easily adapt this TTRPG and the world would fit right into its catalog. It's fun, gripping and doesn't even use a Game Master, completely breaking down the structure that typical audiences might be familiar with.
Kids On Brooms Brings The Magic
Image via Renegade Game Studios
It's Renegade Game Studios, who came up with the TTRPG known as Kids on Brooms. Now on the face of it, this is the industry's answer to Harry Potter. With magic, whimsy and flying broomsticks, some of the core components certainly take their cues from the famous Wizarding franchise, but the game goes so far beyond those influences. Classic cinema, like Amblin Entertainment's offerings, are another great way to understand the tone of this title.
The collaborative RPG sees its players usually taking on a role at a Wizarding school, as they develop their abilities and discover the secrets of this magical landscape. While there are conflict-focused narrative arcs, there's so much more one can do with this game. In fact, the slice-of-life elements seen in Studio Ghibli's work would intertwine well with this experience, especially when it comes to crafting small-scale coming-of-age arcs.
Kids on Brooms is fast-paced, perfect for all ages and can twist and turn based on the Game Master's ideas. So while Kids on Brooms could boast a dark edge, it may also play host to a range of fantastical narratives that feel eerily similar to some of Ghibli's best. The rulebook is accessible, and the mechanics are simple, making this an easy way into the TTRPG landscape for those who have never picked up and played a game of this nature before.
