Get ready for the total solar eclipse next year. Plus, on January 26, 2028, they’ll be an annular solar eclipse.

The 2027 Total Solar Eclipse will be visible in Southern Europe and North Africa.

It’s coming August 2, 2027. It will last three to four times longer than the one in Spain on August 12, 2026. This will be the best one we will see in our lifetimes even better than the 2024 Total Solar Eclipse in the United States.

The path of totality passes over the Strait of Gibraltar, as well as extreme southern Spain, Gibraltar and Tangier in extreme northern Morocco. Then it passes over the Alboran Sea and Oran, Algeria. Then northern Tunisia is in the zone.

Benghazi, Libya is on the centerline, and will receive 6 minutes of totality. But the best view will be in Egypt; Luxor will see 6 minutes 23 seconds of totality. Egypt is mostly desert so you can imagine the perfect weather and having less light pollution. Anyone have a spare camel?

The maximum duration for a total solar eclipse is 7 minutes 30 seconds under ideal orbital conditions. No other solar eclipse visible from land will offer a longer duration of totality until the year 2114.

The August 2, 2027 solar eclipse is the longest since that of July 22, 2009. The maximum duration was 6 minutes 39 seconds, but that happened over the open Pacific. That means the 2027 eclipse will feature more totality on land.

In other words, this upcoming eclipse will be incomparably spectacular! In Egypt, the sun will be almost directly overhead (80 degrees up). That means skywatchers will be able to lie on the ground and stare upwards during totality. Moreover, the path will be exceptionally wide at 160 miles in Egypt, making for a darker eclipse. The shadow will be almost perfectly round, making the 360 degree sunrise phenomenon all the more spectacular.

We will most likely be headed to southern Spain for this in 2027.
