Attitude and Aggression!
Those are two words that should bring a smile to most Buccaneers’ fans. They may also send some of them to Google to look up the definition, because the Buccaneers haven’t shown much of either, especially on defense, in recent years.
I don’t expect to see many opening-day starters playing significant snaps this preseason, but there are several battles at key positions that will be closely scrutinized.
Fierce Defensive CompetitionDefense is where the competition will be especially fierce. Who wins the 4th and 5th cornerback spots? Who provides depth at linebacker and safety? Then there is the uncertainty surrounding Vita Vea. If he is traded or holds out once the season begins, one or two young defensive linemen could suddenly find themselves with a much bigger opportunity.
Very Special TeamsHowever, the area I’m most intrigued to watch is special teams coverage.
The players who occupy those final roster spots—roughly 43 through 53—will be expected to contribute heavily on special teams.
The Bucs brought in a well-respected new Special Teams coach in Danny Smith, and I’m anxious to see whether some of that Attitude and Aggression finally shows up on punt and kickoff coverage.
Because last year, the Bucs essentially waved the white flag on kickoff coverage.
Opponents were routinely starting drives around their own 35-yard line. When you have a subpar defense, giving the opposition that kind of field position is the exact opposite of a sound strategy.
Special teams doesn’t always get the attention it deserves during training camp and the preseason. But for this Bucs team, it could be incredibly important.
The real games begin next month. Until then, pay close attention to the guys fighting for those final roster spots and, more importantly, the players who will make up the Bucs’ special teams units.
They may not be household names.
But they could make the difference this season.
