Apple plans to reinvent Apple Watch lineup

Apple plans to overhaul the Apple Watch lineup as new types of wearables start gaining traction among consumers. As part of the revamp, it supposedly wants to reintroduce a ceramic casing for the Apple Watch.

Apple could even use a round display on future Apple Watch models, though nothing is confirmed yet.

Apple plans big Apple Watch revamp for the future

While the Apple Watch made fitness tracking fashionable and fun, the basic formula established more than a decade ago increasingly looks out of step with where wearable tech is heading. Smart rings and screen-free fitness trackers are giving consumers more options, and Apple is reportedly considering expanding its lineup rather than simply making the existing watch thinner or smarter.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, in the Sunday edition of his Power On newsletter, says Apple’s industrial design team is “exploring a broader rethink of its smartwatches.”

Over the last few years, Apple has only given the Apple Watch a few minor updates. The last redesign arrived with the Apple Watch Series 10 in 2024, introducing a slightly slimmer chassis, a larger screen area and a wider aspect ratio.

Even the upcoming Apple Watch Series 12 is not expected to bring any radical new features or design changes. Meanwhile, Google recently launched the Fitbit Air, while the Oura Ring has emerged as a popular smart ring for people looking to ditch smartwatches.

Apple is taking the increasing popularity of such alternative fitness wearables seriously and has even considered launching its own screenless device. Apple is exploring several options, including launching more affordable and premium models to cater to the low-end and high-end markets.

The company is even considering an Apple Watch with a round display, though Gurman says such a model may never see the light of day.

Apple Watch Series 12 will not bring any radical changes

For now, Apple has not finalized the direction it wants to take or how it plans to overhaul the Apple Watch lineup. But it seems certain that the company will revamp the lineup due to growing competition.

Before a radically new Apple Watch arrives, though, Apple will launch the Apple Watch Series 12 in September. Gurman says Apple might revive the ceramic casing that proved popular in early models. And if that doesn’t happen this year, Apple could reintroduce ceramic next year.
