AMD's AM5 platform has been a solid entry, featuring some of the best chips on the market and a wide variety of entry-level and high-end options to select from.

Despite the AM5 launch, AMD was still focusing on releasing the more mainstream and budget-tier solutions for the older AM4 socket, which still holds the majority share, but the company has recently started to launch affordable CPU options in its AM5 segment. The Ryzen 5 7600X was one such example.

But with recent component price hikes, it has become even more vital to support older lineups. The commitment to AM4 remains strong as ever with the re-release of the Ryzen 7 5800X3D 10th Anniversary Edition, and as AMD pushes its AM5 platforms' longevity by 2029+, the company has a brand-new entry.

Meet the AMD Ryzen 7 7700X3D. This is the brand-new 3D V-Cache chip on the block, which promises some strong gaming potential with Zen 4's solid efficiency figures. The Ryzen 7 7700X3D has the same core and cache configuration as the 7800X3D, one of the best X3D options in the PC market right now, while the 9800X3D and 9850X3D push the capabilities to the next level.

The Ryzen 7 features just one CCD and a singular 3D V-Cache stack, but being a single CCD design is the best approach towards gaming workloads, as the thread scheduler doesn't have to go between the dual CCDs to find the best fit for gaming applications. AMD has made huge strides in optimizing its Ryzen scheduler for Windows OS, and we have seen these optimizations come to full light with the recent game releases.

In terms of specifications, the AMD Ryzen 7 7700X3D 3D V-Cache CPU features the same 8-core/16-thread count as the 7700X, but it has 64 MB more L3 cache, totaling 96 MB. The chip features a base clock of 4.0 GHz and a boost clock of 4.5 GHz. This makes it the slowest of the three Zen 4 8-core chips out there:

• Ryzen 7 7700X - 4.5 / 5.4 GHz
• Ryzen 7 7800X3D - 4.2 / 5.0 GHz
• Ryzen 7 7700X3D - 4.0 / 4.5 GHz

The clock speeds are 200 MHz lower for the base and 500 MHz lower for the boost clock, so we expect a nominal 5% performance hit versus the 7800X3D, but the 3D V-Cache should still maintain good gaming capabilities. You can check out our 7800X3D vs 9800X3D vs 9850X3D benchmarks here.

The AMD Ryzen 7 7700X3D has an official price tag of $329. This makes it the cheapest 8-core 3D V-Cache chip on the AM5 platform so far, and that value is going to entice a larger AM4 audience to make the jump.
