KDE cancelled its “fake” LTS release a year ago: now, Plasma 6.6 is getting a real three-year one

If you're a Linux user and you value stability over new features, there's a good chance you reach for a Long-Term Support (LTS) build over normal ones. These essentially "freeze" a distro in time, preventing it from receiving any new features while still receiving bug fixes and security patches.
KDE Plasma dropped its LTS version of its desktop environment back in 2025, citing several problems with it. However, the KDE team has just announced that it's bringing it back with Plasma 6.6, and with very good reason.
KDE Plasma 6.6 gets an LTE version, thanks to Kubuntu Nate Graham believes KDE can do it right this time
The announcement broke on KDE Developer Nate Graham's blog Pointiest Stick, where he details what people can expect from the new LTS version of KDE Plasma. He explains how KDE Plasma had an LTS branch a year ago, but it was eventually scrapped with no intent to pick it back up.
The reasons why KDE Plasma lost its LTS version in the first place were threefold:
- Most distros ignored it, and it was only really used by Kubuntu.
- It was a "fake" LTS, in that it only received backported Plasma fixes while Frameworks and the KDE apps were left with nothing.
- The backports were never properly tested, as nobody wanted to take up that job.
The KDE team decided to stop distributing an LTS version for Plasma back in May 2025.
Despite that, KDE has now announced that Plasma 6.6 will get an LTS version, including three years of support. This revival wasn't due to KDE having a change of heart, but is instead due to the Kubuntu Focus team sponsoring Techpaladin Software (for which Graham is the CEO) to fix KDE Plasma 6.6 bugs.
Not only that, but KDE will work alongside Kubuntu to ensure that this new initiative is a "real" LTS support channel. This will include bug fixes to KDE Plasma 6.6, Frameworks 6.24 and KDE Gear 25.12, so nothing gets left behind.
Graham takes some time to pre-emptively quell any accusations that he only changed his opinion on LTS builds due to money. He says that it's not that he doesn't like LTS builds; it's that he doesn't like them when they're not done right. With the additional resources that Kubuntu Focus has offered, Graham feels that KDE can actually do a proper job of maintaining an LTS version of Plasma 6.6.
