The former Regional School Unit 13 bus driver who hit and killed a 12-year-old boy in Rockland last fall was sentenced to community service Tuesday, according to court documents.

Jeffrey Colburn, 66, was arrested and charged with manslaughter after running over Brayden Callahan, the Rockland student who was killed in the crash on Nov. 21. School officials have said Colburn no longer works for the district.

According to a crash report, Brayden was in a crosswalk in front of the bus when Colburn accelerated and ran him over.

Colburn reached an agreement with prosecutors and pleaded guilty to one count of causing death while committing a traffic infraction — a civil violation.

A Knox County Superior Court judge sentenced him to 120 hours of community service on Tuesday. The judge also ordered that his driver’s license be suspended for four years and that he may never possess a commercial driver’s license, according to court documents.

Brayden was the first of two Maine children to die in school bus crashes within the space of a month late last year. Weeks after Brayden’s death, 5-year-old Simon Gonzalez was hit and killed by a bus in Standish.
