Canadian Pacific Kansas City says the railway has broken its all-time volume record for transporting Canadian grain and grain products.

The Calgary-based company said it moved 30.66 million metric tonnes during the 2025-26 crop year, breaking the previous record set in the 2020-21 crop year by roughly 72,500 metric tonnes.

The total volume transported during the 2025-26 crop year was 20 per cent higher than the five-year average, CPKC said in a news release.

During the crop year, CPKC set monthly records in January, February, April, May and June.

Ongoing investment in the grain supply chain has unlocked more capacity for Canadian agriculture, said the railway’s vice-president of sales and marketing Elizabeth Hucker.

“Our customers’ investments in 8,500-foot-capable elevators, combined with CPKC’s ongoing investment in our network, assets and operations, are enabling more efficient trains and stronger end-to-end performance,” Hucker said in a statement.

“This shared commitment is helping move record amounts of Canadian grain to market safely, reliably and efficiently, while positioning the supply chain for continued growth.”

For the 2026-27 crop year, CPKC says it’s expanding route options and market access for Canada’s grain shippers.

The company is investing more than $500 million in high-capacity hopper cars and more than $1 billion in new locomotives as part of a multi-year program, according to a news release on its 2026-27 grain service outlook report, released July 31.
