In the climatic race of 2001’s The Fast and the Furious, Dom and Brian line up next to each other, black Dodge Charger and orange Toyota Supra, and hit the gas. A quarter-mile up ahead, a locomotive races towards the crossing right in front of them, the unstoppable approach of destiny. But what if, instead, the pair weren’t drag-racing towards a speeding train, but towards a space-time anomaly that would merge the two cars into one?

Early August, on a closed-off section of Woodward Avenue, Michigan highway M-1, that’s just what has happened. Two racers lined up on the street, both with Mopar presence and bulk, both with Supra-style boosted inline-six horsepower under the hood, muscle and tech fused into modified speed, ready to go door-to-door down a public road that’s been here for more than two hundred years.

Welcome to Dodge’s takeover portion of the Woodward Dream Cruise, better known as “Roadkill Nights.” Held near Pontiac (the city in Michigan, not the former GM sub-brand), this wild event combines the feel of Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome with heavy-hitter Mopar horsepower, custom builds, factory-supported tuners, burnouts, and drag racing. If you own a local tire shop, the amount of rubber that gets destroyed over the weekend is enough to put two kids through college.

This year, Dodge’s challenge is to harness the momentum of an event like this to drag the Charger into the spotlight, and give it a little reflected glory. Your local Ram dealer will happily sell you a half-ton pickup truck with a V8 under the hood, and you can get a Durango with Hemi power for the whole family, but the Charger’s combustion engine offerings are limited to six-cylinders only.

Article content

On-screen, Dom’s Charger and Brian’s Supra ran a close race, and that’s mostly reflected in the real world, too. In the golden age of Japanese performance tuning, you wanted the RB26 of a Nissan Skyline GT-R or the 2JZ of a fourth-gen Supra Turbo to build up as your drag-racer or track rat. There’s nothing embarrassing about having only six cylinders.

Article content

It’s the same case over at BMW, which ditched the high-revving 4.0L V8 of the fourth-generation M3 and never looked back. The current M3 Competition, which makes more than 500 hp from a twin-turbocharged inline-six in its most potent form, is not what you’d call “slow.”

But Nissan, Toyota, and BMW have a heritage of building inline-six performance, whereas peak Mopar muscle usually came with eight cylinders. There are plenty of exceptions, like the wild Plymouth XNR concept with its slant-six powertrain, but six is less than eight. Imagine if Nigel Tufnel’s guitar amp only went to nine. He’d be a bit disappointed.

Article content

Having said all that, you can’t argue with the new Charger Super Bee’s Hellcat-beating quarter-mile time. Ask Dom: winning’s winning, doesn’t matter how many cylinders you used to do it. And by turning loose the tuning crowd on its sedan, Dodge is hoping to prove the Charger can be both fast and furious.

Running between Detroit and Pontiac, Woodward Avenue was first mapped out in the very early 1800s. Today, it’s a slightly rumpled swathe of tarmac, running four lanes in each direction, interrupted by the occasional traffic light. Not your usual featureless interstate, it runs past shops hawking ice cream and cafes, trying to entice travellers to pull in for a treat.

Article content

Headed north, the lanes fill with orange cones and signage, dwindling to a single U-turn route in front of a fenced-off area. This is an outlay of the M-1 concourse, where Dodge has set up shop for the weekend. It’s laid claim to a section of Woodward itself, lifted the speed limits, laid down track prep and timing lights, and set stage for battle.

Article content

Later in the weekend, onlookers will be able to see full-on 12,000-horsepower NHRA Top Fuel drag racers tearing up the road, running nitromethane-fuelled Dodge V8s. Racing on Woodward will also be open to run-what-you-brung-style action, everything from Buick Grand Nationals to Fox-body Mustangs. It’s like a legally sanctioned American Graffiti.

Beyond the Super Bee, Dodge has unlocked the Charger by supplying eight examples to a lineup of modifiers, each of whom could be a Fast and Furious supporting character in their own right. What’s interesting is that they aren’t all the usual hot-rodder types, but come from backgrounds that range from Euro-tuner to rotary-engine expert.

Article content

These Charger builds start out with a clean-lined OEM-plus setup and run up to more than a thousand horsepower. You’ve got your graffiti-patterned wraps, your sticky drag radials out back, your the-hood-doesn’t-fit-because-basketball-turbo Hot-Wheels look. You name it, they’ve wrenched it.

Dodge also showed off a couple of purple drift Chargers, built out to 750 hp with one twin and one single turbocharger setup. Drifting is one of the fastest growing motorsports out there, simply because it doesn’t require a great deal of explanation to see where the excitement comes from. You don’t have to clock hundredths of seconds, you just get to watch a big purple beast scorch sideways and smell the tire smoke.

Charger as canvas is all kinds of a smart move for getting the enthusiast market to show the car some love. It also helps that, while some of the modifications are purely custom, Dodge is leveraging its Direct Connection program for most of these builds.

Resurrected five years ago, Direct Connection was originally a 1970s program that allowed for bolt-on power that doesn’t void your factory warranty; today it functions much the same way. Dodge has been growing this effort with partners like Roush and Hennessey, recently launching a series of supercharged versions of the Ram 1500. You can order a Ram Rumble Bee with as much as 900 hp and supporting upgrades, with full factory support—assuming you’ve got pockets deep enough.

With both the returning Camaro and the next-generation Mustang reportedly getting four-door models within the next few years, the Charger won’t have the high-firepower-sedan segment to itself much longer. That’s probably a good thing, in the same way that Ford bringing back the Bronco was welcomed by fans of the Jeep Wrangler. Competition sharpens the breed, and builds the fan base.

Woodward Avenue is, after all, four lanes wide each way. Outside of the M-1 concourse, there were plenty of Mopar products to be spotted cruising up and down the avenue, classic and modern.

Article content

The driver’s seat of a Ram TRX was the front row seat to have, watching a De Tomaso Pantera uncork its V8 briefly, spotting twin modern Supras flying in formation, clocking the perfection of a sixties Continental with whitewall tires and midnight blue paint. As the East Coast counterpoint to California’s tony Monterey Car Week, the party on Woodward is a celebration of Detroit’s long history and heritage.

Article content

And where does the modern Charger slot into that story? After a bumpy start, Dodge is back playing the hand it has since the beginning: when in doubt, power out. In this case, it’s more boost instead of more cylinders and more displacement. The Dodge fans gathered in Michigan seemed to approve. But, just like the Fast and Furious franchise proved, the crowd will always bay for more.
