FALMOUTH – Margaret Thomas Wescott, 88, of South Portland, died peacefully in Falmouth on July 25, 2026, after a prolonged illness.

“Peggy” was born on Nov. 19, 1937, in Newburgh, New York, the daughter and only child of Mary Schenck Thomas and Raymond Thomas. Known fondly as “The Queen” for her passion for England and Wales, she had an indomitable spirit and was regularly described as a force of nature. Most who met her were treated to a lesson on the proper Royal wave.

She had a healthy obsession with grammar, World War II codebreaking, and clocks.

A former pianist, her love of music was best embodied in her Michael Jackson cat jacket.

Music moved her into her late years, when she tap-danced in a stage performance and grooved with the staff at Legacy Memory Care.

Her social life was buoyed by her love of her fellow Rotarians, deep friendships, and the animals she adored.

She was brilliant, charming, and full of gusto.

Peggy was predeceased by her beloved husband, Paul, in 2013. Their 34-year-marriage featured a love of the Red Sox, crossword puzzles (a contact sport), hearty travels around the world, and books, books, and more books.

Their marriage in 1979 resulted in a blended family of eight children.

Peggy is survived by daughters, Betsy Ring, Connie Gregg and husband Jim, Molly Carpenter and husband David, son John Ring and wife Yu Feng; stepchildren, Paul Wescott Jr. and wife Margery; Thomas Wescott; Ruth Montero and husband Peter; and John Wescott.

Known to her grandchildren as “Peanut Butter” Grammy, Noodles, and Janny, she treasured time with Nina McKee (Christophe), Aidan McKee (Kia), Emily Gregg Sproull (Dan), Chandler Gregg (Evelyn), Julia Carpenter Conway (Neil), Anna Carpenter, Hannah and Willy Ring, Tamara and Trevor Wescott, Brad and Katie Wescott and Nicholas and Claire Montero.

She was a proud great-grandmother to Noa and Cal Conway, and Charlotte Sproull.

She was predeceased by her infant granddaughter, Elsie Thomas Carpenter, in May 1995.

Visiting Hours will be held from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m., on Saturday, Aug. 15, at Jones, Rich & Barnes Funeral Home, 199 Woodford Street, Portland, ME 04103.

A private interment will be arranged by the family.

The family thanks the staff at Legacy Memory Care at Ocean View in Falmouth for their precious care during her 15-month stay and encourages donations to the Alzheimer’s Association.
