Russell Westbrook has brought the curtain down on an 18-year NBA career, announcing his retirement on social media Wednesday after playing for seven different teams.

The Seattle SuperSonics selected Westbrook with the No. 4 overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft. He went on to finish his career with impressive averages of 20.9 points, 6.9 rebounds and 8.0 assists per game.

Despite the uncertainty, the 37-year-old appeared determined to continue playing just days before his retirement announcement.

"I love playing basketball. And if it happens, it works. That is my plan," Westbrook said.

The Sacramento Kings were among the teams interested in bringing him back.

Just one day before Westbrook announced his retirement, Marc Stein of The Stein Line reported that Sacramento had explored the possibility of reuniting with the veteran and potentially having him serve as a mentor to highly touted rookie Darius Acuff Jr.

“Sometimes you don’t even know when you’ve already watched the end. You had to be there. And now it’s over,” Westbrook posted.

Westbrook leaves the league as its all-time leader in triple-doubles, having recorded 209 during his career. His ability to contribute as a scorer, rebounder and playmaker made him one of the most versatile guards of his generation.

He also captured the 2017 NBA MVP award during his time with the Oklahoma City Thunder, the franchise where he spent the first 11 seasons of his career.

Despite spending his final years with several different teams, Westbrook’s legacy will largely be defined by his remarkable run in Oklahoma City.

During his 11 seasons with the Thunder, he earned eight All-Star selections and won the 2016-17 MVP award. He also claimed two scoring titles and three assist titles, while becoming synonymous with the triple-double.
