Rosie O'Donnell has revealed how Saturday Night Live once passed on her pitch to play a prominent Donald Trump staffer back in 2017.

O'Donnell, 64, made the claim in a Thursday interview with Variety.

She recalled how eager she was to take a comedic turn as Trump’s then-Chief Strategist, Steve Bannon, at the time. A series of social media posts made the desire known.

Creator Lorne Michaels saw the campaign but dismissed the concept for being too real, she said.

O'Donnell discussed how the 81-year-old showrunner apparently flagged her hatred for the administration as disqualifying.

'Lorne had apparently said, “She’s too angry. It’s not funny when you’re angry,”' O'Donnell admitted.

'I wasn’t angry. I just thought it would be funny to do him.'

At the time, 29,916 fans signed a fan-made petition demanding O'Donnell take on the likeness of Bannon.

'Available - if called i will serve!!!' O'Donnell tweeted amid those calls. She even shared a now-infamous rendering of her face superimposed on Bannon's body.

At the time, figures like Alec Baldwin and Melissa McCarthy were at the height of the first term-lampooning success, playing the parts of the President and then-White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer, respectively.

'I put a picture up of me with Steve Bannon’s hair right when that was going down and I wrote, “SNL?"' O'Donnell told Variety during their interview.

She confirmed that she had never been asked to appear and pan any administration officials, including the commander-in-chief himself.

'I haven’t been asked to do that. But believe me, I would if they asked me.'

Less than two years before, Trump brought up O'Donnell during the Republican primary debates.

Asked about his tendency to use derogatory terms to describe women, Trump proudly declared, 'Only [when it came to] Rosie O'Donnell' - reigniting a feud that traces back more than 20 years.

The two have been at odds since.    

O’Donnell moved to Ireland in 2025 after the start of Trump's second term, after months of posts and TikToks touting the purported danger of the conservative's resurgence.

She took a more recent stab at Trump while in the US last month for the Tony Awards in Manhattan.

'If you grew up in New York, you knew he was an a**hole and a liar from day one,“ she told Variety on June 6. 'I remember when his planes were repossessed off the runways at LaGuardia. I remember when he was broke. 

'I remember when he would call up places and pretend to be his own publicist.'

'He is a conman. He is a narcissist. And he is a psychopath if you ask me,' she said.

Jimmy Kimmel - another well-known anti-Trump comedian - announced O'Donnell will guest host his program in August. He billed it as a 'special treat for our commander in chief.'

'You're welcome,' Kimmel told the LA crowd on June 19.

O'Donnell's disdain for Trump dates all the way back to her days on The View.

She said of Trump during a 2006 episode of the program. 'Left the first wife, had an affair, left the second wife, had an affair. Had kids both times.'  

O'Donnell's debut as a late-night host starts on August 16, according to ABC. It will last an entire week.
