Idris Elba is investing about $1 million to give nearly 100,000 African creators access to cutting-edge AI resources as part of a calculated effort to strengthen the continent’s creative economy. According to Bloomberg, the initiative, which is partnered with Google, aims to help entrepreneurs and filmmakers in several countries by removing the high financial barriers typically associated with digital production.
The program will give creators in Nigeria, South Africa, Ghana, Kenya, and Sierra Leone access to Google’s Gemini AI assistant and other AI-powered tools.
The program’s goal is to assist up-and-coming artists in creating digital content and expanding their work without the substantial funding usually needed for media, film, and other artistic projects.

“We think about all those creatives who don’t have access to these enormous studio budgets,” James Manyika, Google’s senior vice president for research and technology, told Bloomberg. “AI is potentially a tool that can enable them to do work that they couldn’t otherwise do because they don’t have huge budgets.”
According to Elba, the collaboration aims to bridge the gap between opportunity and talent in Africa’s creative industries.
Elba said, “The barrier is not a lack of vision—it’s a lack of access. Talent is everywhere, opportunity is not.”
The technology initiative adds to a host of creative infrastructure projects Elba is leading across the continent. In 2024, he announced plans to build a film studio in Zanzibar, Tanzania, which Zanzibar Investment Minister Shariff Ali Sharif said could rival Hollywood, Nollywood and Bollywood.
At the time of the announcement, a representative for Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan told the BBC that if the project is successful, it could open up economic opportunities not only for Tanzania but also for nations in Eastern and Central Africa.
In addition, Elba is building a creative village in Ghana to help local storytellers, artists, and filmmakers while boosting the creation of culturally authentic content for international streaming platforms, according to Bloomberg.
