ROME (VINnews)-The latest round of talks between Israel and Lebanon concluded Thursday in Rome, with Israeli officials saying several options remain under discussion for a foreign monitoring force to oversee implementation of the Lebanon pilot zones.

Sources emphasized that Israel will not approve any country actively pursuing cases against it in international courts in The Hague.

Switzerland is currently viewed as one of the leading candidates to deploy personnel to monitor the agreement on the ground in Lebanon, according to Israeli diplomatic correspondent Guy Azriel.

Senior Swiss officials have held multiple rounds of talks with their Israeli and American counterparts on the matter since February. Swiss Ambassador to Israel Simon Geissbühler maintains close ties with Israel’s leadership, while Switzerland also enjoys strong relations with the Lebanese government — a combination that makes it potentially acceptable to both sides.

Switzerland’s long-standing neutrality and proven record in similar international monitoring missions further strengthen its candidacy. The prevailing assessment is that Israel could live with a Swiss role, positioning the country as one of the most serious contenders for the monitoring force.
