The 2025 NFL season was a huge success for New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye.
He finished second in league MVP voting. He helped lead the Patriots back to the playoffs with their first AFC East division title since 2019. Pretty much everything went great… except the final game.
Super Bowl 60 against the Seattle Seahawks was a tough grind for Maye and the Patriots offense. The dominant Seahawks defense kept the Patriots off the scoreboard for three quarters.
Maye completed 27 of 43 pass attempts for 259 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Most of his stats came in the fourth quarter after the outcome was largely decided. The Patriots ultimately lost 29-13.
Maye reflected on the Super Bowl defeat in an interview with Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer.
“The way that last game ended … ” says Maye, collecting his thoughts. “I feel like when our defense played the way it played, it gave us a chance to win. It’s my responsibility, with the offense, to put points on the board. When you feel like you don’t do your part, that’s what eats at you.
“What could I have done more after practice to hit that throw? I can think of five, 10 plays in the Super Bowl right now where you’re like, man, this play could change your life. You win this game, and just knowing that that’s gone, and how much work you have to put in to get back to that moment, it’s just something that I won’t forget. I think it’ll help me.”

The Patriots didn’t sit back in the offseason. They were aggressive in getting Maye help at just about every position.
The most prominent upgrades came at wide receiver. The Patriots made a bold trade for Philadelphia Eagles star A.J. Brown and signed former Green Bay Packers wideout Romeo Doubs in free agency.
New England also bolstered its offensive line by drafting Utah tackle Caleb Lomu in the first round and signing veteran guard Alijah Vera-Tucker in free agency. The Patriots also used a third-round pick to select Notre Dame tight end Eli Raridon, who has performed well in training camp so far.
The Patriots finished last season as the league’s second-highest scoring team at 28.8 points per game. If healthy, they could match or even exceed that output in 2026 even though they will play a tougher schedule.
But despite reaching the Super Bowl last season, plenty of experts still don’t consider the Patriots among the top title contenders in 2026. NFL.com, for example, has the Patriots at No. 12 in its latest power rankings.
Maye and the Patriots won’t have to wait long for an opportunity to silence some critics. They open the season with a showdown against the Seahawks in Seattle on Sept. 9.
