Lucy Davis, best known for starring in the original British sitcom The Office, said she has incurable breast cancer.

The 53-year-old actress, who played Dawn Tinsley in the U.K. series during its two-season run, announced her grim prognosis Tuesday in a post on Instagram.

Alongside a video of herself ringing a bell to mark the end of her cancer treatment, Davis wrote about her health battle and her outlook in life.

“A year and a half ago I was diagnosed with Stage 4 breast cancer, which has metastasized to my bones. Specifically to my spine, right hip, and my ribs,” Davis said. “The cancer is incurable and too late for chemo.”

The comedian went on to describe that she initially felt a small “lump,” which she described as a “hard spot” that was so tiny she “almost didn’t bother getting it checked out.”

Davis added, “So I guess I’m saying don’t ignore anything — get everything checked out:)”

Emphasis on facing battle with humour

She said she’s planning to “live out whatever might be left” of her life in “as fun a way” as possible.

“I always like to find the teachable moments in anything negative that happens,” she continued. “And cancer has not disappointed in that regard; there’s a lot I have learned from it and I’m grateful for that.

“As some of you will know, the pain can really be something else. Standing and walking for too long a time can be hard and I need to use a wheelchair sometimes (so if you see me toddling around in one, feel free to give me a push!)”

Remaining positive, Davis said she’ll continue to live her life with humour, asking her friends and family to “make fun” of her “as much as possible” and to not be treated “like a sick person,” adding, “There’s nothing that will make you feel more unwell than being treated as if you’re unwell.”

Ready to accept her fate

Regarding her future, she said, “I’m not scared of whatever comes next. I’m at peace with it. I’ll see my Gracie (her late dog) sooner than expected and for me, leaving my physical body just means going home. Any and all grieving is for my family; it’s far harder for them than for me.

The actress said she’ll keep working for animal rights, a cause she cherishes, and would like to continue acting.

“I’m perfectly able to do so and acting is one of the biggest joys in my life,” she said.

“For those of you on a similar journey to mine, I do wish you well. Cancer asks a lot from us, physically and mentally. And we all get to do it however we choose.”

Aside from her role as the receptionist Dawn in The Office, Davis recently played Hilda Spellman in the Netflix series Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.

Her on-screen niece, Kiernan Shipka, was among the thousands who commented on her Instragram post, writing, “I love you so much Lucy.”

While cancer survivor Jenna Fischer, who played Pam Beesly — the American version of Davis’ The Office character — responded with, “Beautiful post. Love you lots. And yes to working with cancer! Let’s spread that message far and wide! How working is such a comfort!”
