A man has been accused of making thousands of threatening phone calls to women across the nation for weeks, prompting a plea for victims to come forward.

The 27-year-old man in the Northern Territory allegedly made more than 12,000 calls to numbers in Australia from June 19.

He targeted women and made sexual threats during the calls, police said.

An investigation was launched after the matter was reported to NT Police on July 29 when the man's number was allegedly identified as being located in Alice Springs.

"The 27-year-old man was identified and arrested yesterday, and his mobile phone was seized," an NT Police statement said on Thursday.

He has been charged with five counts of using a carriage service to harass, menace or cause offence.

Police have reached out and urged more victims to come forward following the arrest.

"Due to the circumstances of the alleged offending, the ... (NT Police) believes more victims may have been impacted," the police statement said.

Anyone who has received a threatening message, phone call or voicemail should contact NT Police on 131 444 and quote reference NTP2600072674.

The man was remanded to appear in Alice Springs Local Court later on Thursday.
