Practical exposure, thorough preparation, professional ethics and continuous learning are essential for success in legal profession, former Karnataka High Court judge C.M. Joshi told law students at the Central University of Karnataka (CUK), Kalaburagi, on Wednesday.
Addressing an interactive session organised by the Department of Law, CUK, Mr. Joshi said law students and young advocates should give importance to practical exposure and develop the habit of thorough preparation and legal research. Advocates should focus on responsible advocacy rather than unnecessary confrontation in court, he advised.
“Studies will not end here. This is only the beginning,” Mr. Joshi said, stressing that learning must continue throughout a legal professional’s career.
He also shared his educational journey and experiences as an advocate and judge, besides speaking about the challenges he had faced and the importance of hard work, discipline and practical experience in building a successful legal career.
Mr. Joshi cautioned students against relying uncritically on artificial intelligence (AI) in legal work. While AI could assist in legal research and judicial processes, he emphasised that human judgment and proper verification remained essential.
The session focused on practical dimensions of the legal profession, courtroom conduct, professional ethics, legal research and the emerging role of AI in the justice system.
The programme was coordinated by Basavaraj M. Kubakaddi. Anant D. Chinchure, head of the Department of Law, welcomed the gathering, while Vandita Tiwari anchored the session. Vijnaneshwara Pratishthana Trust executive trustee Mahadevayya Karadalli and faculty members of the Department of Law participated.
Research scholars and undergraduate and postgraduate students were present.
