Booming prediction markets have helped Plus500 deliver its greatest first-half revenues in three years.

The trading platform moved into the fast-growing sector – which allows clients to bet on the outcome of real-world events such as elections – in February.

The FTSE 250-listed group then launched its sports prediction markets offering at the end of June, just as the World Cup got into full swing.

Plus500 hopes the sector will be a main growth driver.

Overall revenues lifted 12 per cent to £343millio in the six months to June 30, marking its highest interim result for three years, while customer income hit a five-year high, up 24 per cent year-on-year.

Pre-tax profit growth edged up to £135.8million from £134.7million a year earlier, too.
