Press release:Veteran quarterback Willie Fair connected for four touchdown passes and the 716 Wildcats' defense stifled the undermanned Genesee County Spartans in a 40-0 victory on Saturday at Pembroke Town Park.The Spartans, who suited up just 16 players due to injuries and other commitments, end their Northeastern Football Alliance (NFA) season at 2-4-1.The Wildcats move on to the league playoffs with a 6-2 record. They will face Watertown Red & Black in one semifinal while the regular-season champion Southern Tier Stallions will square off against the Upstate Predators in the other semifinal.Fair hit wide receiver Che'kore Moore from 17 yards out late in the first quarter to open the scoring and, following a muffed punt attempt, handed off to running back Cordair Bailey, who burst up the middle for a 15-yard TD. David Guarino kicked the first of his four extra points to make it 13-0.Late in the first half, safety Kendrick Benson intercepted a pass by Spartans' quarterback Virgil Abulah and returned it 80 yards to the end zone.The Wildcats went up 26-0 in the third quarter when Fair hit Moore from 15 yards out. The visitors capped the scoring on a 45-yard pass from Fair to Justin Marrero and a 40-yard pass from Fair to Jordan Brown in the fourth quarter.With many frontline players absent, the Spartans were unable to generate much offense but did come up with some big plays on defense, including a diving interception by George Hall in the first quarter. Tackles behind the line by defensive back James Brown, linebacker Cody Wenner and lineman Tim King stopped a couple of Wildcats' drives.Wildcats' Head Coach Roland Davis, who also is the NFA commissioner, credited the Spartans for finishing the season despite being shorthanded."Genesee County has been a solid team in the league and, hopefully, they'll come back strong next season," Davis said.Spartans' President Tammy Hathaway said she expects some of the players to participate in an all-star game against the TriPoint Football League on Aug. 29 in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
