For a little over two minutes, a total solar eclipse swept from the Arctic down into Spain, plunging a narrow band of the planet into daytime darkness for the first time on mainland Europe since 1999.

Totality lasted just 2 minutes and 18 seconds at its longest, and it hadn’t touched mainland Europe since 1999, or most of Spain in more than a century.

The Moon’s shadow began over far northern Russia, swept near the North Pole, crossed eastern Greenland, clipped western Iceland, and made landfall in northern Spain before ending over the Balearic Islands at sunset. In Reykjavík, totality held for about a minute in the late afternoon. By the time the shadow reached León, Zaragoza, and Valencia, the Sun sat low on the horizon, so much of Spain watched a total eclipse and a sunset at once.

Outside that narrow band, a partial eclipse reached most of Europe, northwestern Africa, much of Canada, and the northern United States from Alaska to North Carolina. Western and central Europe saw the Sun 80 to 95 percent covered.

The Moon crossed 2.3 days after perigee, riding slightly larger in the sky, which is what pushed it over the edge from a ring of fire to full darkness.
