Woman charged after allegedly setting fire to 2 suburban homes while out on bail

A woman is facing charges after she allegedly set fire to two homes in a northwest suburb while out on bail, authorities announced on Wednesday.
Kristin Nice, a 61-year-old woman from Marengo, was arrested and charged with two counts of arson after she allegedly set fire to two neighboring homes, McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office said.
On the evening of July 13, Marengo Fire & Rescue District officials responded to a call on the 18000 block of Millstream Road in unincorporated Marengo and found a single-family home that was on fire, authorities said. The bulk of the fire was in the back of the home and on its rear porch, but it spread quickly to the attic, authorities said. While fighting that blaze, occupants in a neighboring home also reported a small fire on the exterior of their home. One of the residents was able to extinguish most of the fire themself before crews arrived, authorities said.
No one was injured in either fire but the home that officials responded to first was rendered uninhabitable by the damage. Officers with the McHenry County sheriff’s office arrested Nice on Wednesday after several weeks of investigating.
Nice agreed to remain in custody pending her trial after hearing the state’s attorney’s petition to detain her and agreeing “there was clear and convincing evidence that she posed a real and present threat to the safety of any persons and the community,” authorities said.
She also agreed to revoke her pretrial release in two other pending cases that stemmed from alleged incidents from June of residential burglary and aggravated assault of a police officer.
“Two homes were allegedly set on fire in a residential neighborhood, putting families, neighbors, and first responders at risk. The allegations here, particularly when considered alongside this woman’s other pending felony cases, demonstrate exactly why we sought detention. When someone’s conduct continues to escalate and threatens the safety of an entire neighborhood, we will act aggressively to protect the community,” said McHenry County State’s Attorney Randi Freese.
Nice is scheduled to appear in court next on Sept. 4.
