As development continues on the live-action Warhammer 40,000 series from Henry Cavill (with Mike Flanagan signing on as director and showrunner this past week), Variety is reporting that Prime Video has also given the green light to an animated event series set in the Games Workshop universe.

The as-yet-untitled series will serve as a spinoff from Blur Studio’s animated anthology series Secret Level – specifically the Warhammer 40,000-focussed episode ‘And They Shall Know No Fear’. That episode was directed by Dave Wilson, who will also serve as director and co-creator of the animated event series alongside John Orloff (Band of Brothers). Henry Cavill will executive produce alongside Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment, as well Blur Studios chief and Secret Level creator Tim Miller.

“Secret Level wasn’t conceived simply as an anthology. It was designed as a launchpad for larger stories,” said Wilson. “The response to the Warhammer episode was extraordinary, particularly from fans who understood how much care went into getting the world right. This series gives us the opportunity to build on that foundation and tell a much larger story. I’ve wanted to tell a long-form story set in Warhammer 40,000 for more than twenty years, and I’m incredibly grateful to Games Workshop and Amazon MGM Studios for the opportunity to do it.”

The most popular tabletop miniature wargame in the world, Warhammer 40,000 takes place in a bleak, distant future where humanity’s existence is threatened by hostile alien and supernatural threats. Having spawned a host of tie-in video games, novels and other media, the TV and film rights were acquired by Amazon MGM Studios in 2022, with super fan Henry Cavill overseeing development on a range of potential projects. 

Secret Level is an animated anthology series from Blur Studio with each episode taking place within the worlds of various video games. Alongside Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, other games in the first season includes Dungeons & Dragons, Mega Man, Pac-Man, and Unreal Tournament. A second season is currently in the works.
