Back in 2014, rumors frequently swirled that Microsoft was working on a Windows Phone-powered Surface Phone that it aimed to release alongside its Surface Pro 2-in-1 laptop. However, the prototype never actually released, and Microsoft eventually dropped support for Windows Phone in 2017.
Fast-forward to 2026, and it looks like we're finally getting a look at what the Surface Phone might have looked like, courtesy of Windows Central. The new photos show off the mysterious prototype, reportedly codenamed "Raven." Not much is known about the device other than the fact that it's from 2013-2014 and that it runs an early pre-release version of Windows Phone 8.1. To be clear, we don't know for sure that this is Microsoft's mythical Surface Phone, but the design makes that seem like a reasonable conclusion.
According to Windows Central, this version of the Surface Phone features an unknown Qualcomm chip, a 720p screen, a Microsoft logo on the rear, and a silver metal frame that looks a lot like the Surface 2 that was released that same year (it also reminds me of the Surface Book's design in some ways). There are silver-colored physical hardware keys for navigation, which were still pretty common with smartphones from that era.
The mystery smartphone also features individual up and down volume buttons, a camera button on the right side, and a power button at its top. Other features include a micro-USB port, a headphone jack, and a SIM card on its left side.
This is our best look at the ill-fated Surface Phone yet Microsoft eventually released the dual-screen Surface Duo
It's important to keep in mind that this is just one of likely several Surface Phone prototypes Microsoft was working on at the time. With that in mind, it's unclear if the final consumer version of the Surface Phone would have looked similar to this prototype.
The closest thing we actually got to the Surface Phone was the Android-powered, dual-screen Surface Duo. This genuinely compelling smartphone was overshadowed by Samsung's Galaxy Fold series, which released at nearly the same time. At one point, Microsoft was also reportedly working on a Windows Phone version of the Surface Duo.
