Can you view the eclipse with an auto darkening mask? The sun doesnt switch it.
Kram Member
No, still lets far too much light through even when darkened.
Ideally buy the proper glasses.

But an old style fixed- shade is ok ?
Just had a squint through my old one - didn't blind me !
Auto one not so good , still found me pint though . Found the table when I bumped into it. !
Use a TV remote to switch it.
Moon is about halfway across the sun now..

My esab ones don’t reliably switch though one does if you cover one of the sensors. I’ve got fancy optrel one and that switches fine.

Just used one of my old ones that has a test button, worked fine...then tried an older one with no test button, temperamental at best...but both stacked together worked a treat

My Speedglass worked awesome, the Mrs had never seen an eclipse before so clearly

I managed to get this through me Speedglass, not very clear , but starting from the bottom right here in Birmingham around 6.30pm
This is what we saw through my w/helmet, in clarity, but this is a pro, filtered image I've just dragged off tinternet of todays eclipse
What you should notice is the object eclipsing the sun, doesn't have a halo showing the rest of it, there is nothing there, no body.
This what what you would see if the moon was a solid body, if you look at the first image of mine taken with my phone through my welding helmet, there is nothing
obscuring the sun apart from the eclipsed section
I can lock my Parweld bucket into shade 14 which gave a good view.

It was my parweld that wouldn't trigger, whilst the sip mask I have knocking about was fine.
I pressed buttons on the parweld that I've never paid any attention to previously at all, but, still, no good.
I took off the clear bits of plastic on both the outside and inside. I wish it was that clear when I was welding!
(I even replaced the bits of plastic not so long ago!)

Welp, that was utterly underwhelming from Edinburgh! Just clouds and then sunset - even had my phone on timelapse for an hour and a half and got... clouds and sunset

You know how the earth is illuminated by the moon? Exactly the same thing happens to the moon with sunlight reflected from the earth onto the moon. What you posted in the bottom image is what you might see if there was absolutely no light reflected from earth, which doesn’t happen.
Also the brightness of the sun means the moon and sky just appear “dark” compared to the sun.
But I’m sure none of that will convince you, so perhaps you could enlighten us as to why it appears as it does?
My decent mask triggered fine, turned to shade 13. Cheapo one triggered early on, but when it started to have an effect and dimming, it wouldn't.
Mask got borrowed by neighbour too
Leads into my oft-told tale about the total eclipse in the 90s - stood in the work car park, all of us with fixed shade masks.
As it lifted, the overall supplier arrived to pick up the dirty ones, bring the cleaned ones. Driver and his young lad got out, very confused, to a round of applause as it got lighter...
The name of our laundry supplier, on the side of the van?
"Sunlight"
