If you’re curious, this data suggests owners seem to have a better chance of being reunited with their car in western Canada, with that part of the country recording a 69% recovery rate compared to about 44% in Quebec and Ontario. Atlantic Canada roughly splits the difference in this measure of vehicles both stolen and recovered during the reporting period.

“The decrease in auto theft showcases the successful collaboration of the insurance industry with law enforcement and all levels of government,” said Bryan Gast, National Vice President, Intelligence and Investigations at Équité Association. “However, long-term progress hinges on modernizing Transport Canada’s Motor Vehicle Safety Regulations.” For its part, Transport Canada is said to have been actively seeking industry feedback on updates to its regulations in a bid to combat auto theft, including a goal of harmonizing Canadian regulations with global best practices in vehicle cyber security.

That mash of government and PR word salad means the group is pushing Transport Canada to specifically look at mandating UN Regulation 155, a 30-page document essentially requiring every manufacturer to run a certified Cybersecurity Management System (CSMS) and pass a cybersecurity type approval. The regulation is broadly required for new vehicles on sale across the pond for the last couple of years.

Back in this country, Équité Association credits the recent improvements in theft numbers to collaborations between the broader insurance industry, law enforcement, and government initiatives which focus on protecting Canadians from the impact of auto theft.
