The Atlanta Falcons' Bijan Robinson signed a contract extension on August 5 that made him the highest-paid running back in the NFL. He held that title for less than 48 hours, with the Detroit Lions and Jahmyr Gibbs agreeing to an even larger deal.

Gibbs is returning to the Lions on a three-year, $67.5 million deal. It includes $51.5 million in guaranteed money and could be worth up to $75.75 million if Gibbs reaches certain milestones.

The deal gets Gibbs $750,000 more than Robinson's contract, both in terms of base earnings and escalator bonuses. The guarantee is also $500,000 higher than Robinson's $51 million in guaranteed money.

Both contracts are well deserved. Gibbs, the 12th pick of the 2023 NFL Draft, has amassed 3,580 rushing yards, 1,449 rushing yards, and 49 touchdowns over his three-year career. The touchdowns are the most among any player in his first three seasons—two more than Hall of Famer Barry Sanders put up over the first three years of his career.

Gibbs has reached the Pro Bowl every year he's been in the league. He also finished fourth in Rookie of the Year voting in 2023, and ended up eighth in AP Offensive Player of the Year voting in 2024.

Perhaps most impressively, he's put up these numbers while splitting time in the backfield with David Montgomery. Now, he's going to be the feature back for Detroit's high-powered offense, complemented by new signee Isiah Pacheco, who joins the Lions from the Kansas City Chiefs.

Detroit finished 9-8 last season and missed the playoffs, a year removed from a 15-2 record and first place finish in the NFC. But they're confident that they can improve in a loaded NFC North and make a return to the playoffs. Gibbs will be a big component of that.

Financially, it's a huge pay day for Gibbs, too. His 2025 salary was $1 million. He'll still be on his rookie contract this season, but it's got to be mighty reassuring to know a massive raise is coming his way.
