QR Calgary 770 AM announced Wednesday morning that it will be the new home of the Calgary Flames radio broadcast. In early July, the Flames were left without a radio broadcast partner when Sportsnet 960 was shut down by Rogers.

That situation didn’t last long.

“When the situation, for lack of a better term, occurred and our previous radio partner decided they didn’t want to be involved anymore, we had a moment of panic and then said, ‘OK, let’s take a deep breath here and figure out our options’,” said Robert Hayes, Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corp. president and CEO. “We almost didn’t have that out of our mouths when all of a sudden Corus contacted us and said, ‘We would love to sit down and see if we can do something here from a radio partner perspective.’

“It all came together really fast. I’ve been involved in business my entire career and these types of things usually take plus or minus six months to bring together, and we did this in a matter of weeks.”

Under the agreement, all Calgary Flames home and road games will be broadcast for the next five years, giving Flames fans a dedicated radio station to follow the team.

“We are thrilled to welcome the Calgary Flames back home — as the station that broadcast the Stanley Cup-winning team’s games in 1989, this is an incredibly special time for QR Calgary 770AM,” said Tammy Cole, vice-president audio for Corus Entertainment, in a press release.

“This partnership represents a full circle moment, and we’re proud to build on our shared history while creating a new chapter for fans as they continue to follow and support their team for years to come.”

On July 7, Rogers Radio took Sportsnet 960 The Fan off the air, leaving the Flames radio broadcast without a home.

Article content

Sportsnet 960 provided extensive coverage of the Calgary Flames, airing up to 12 hours of hockey programming daily, including news analysis and live game coverage.

Sportsnet was the Flames’ regional broadcast rights partner. In 2024, Rogers and the team extended their exclusive partnership for 11 more seasons before the radio station was closed.

Postmedia Flames reporter Danny Austin shares three thoughts on what the Calgary Flames’ new radio home on QR Calgary 770 means for fans — and what it could mean for Calgary’s broader sports landscape:

Article content

1. This is a win

Article content

This is unequivocally a win for Flames fans. It ensures they’ll have a place to listen to every single game for the next five seasons, whether those games are at home or on the road.

Article content

The cost of watching any NHL team in Canada has gone up in recent years, with increases to the monthly price of Sportsnet’s streaming platform and the recent announcement that Wednesday games will be sublicensed to Amazon Prime.

Article content

Games on the radio will still be free for listeners, though, and they’ll be able to hear the broadcasts in their cars, homes or anywhere else that QR Calgary 770 reaches.

Article content

At a time when it seems like the cost of everything is going up by the day, that shouldn’t be taken for granted. The Flames were well aware of the importance of having their games broadcast on the radio, and that belief was reinforced by the reaction from fans to the announcement that Sportsnet 960 was being shuttered.
