2:15 p.m.: Interstate 70 has been reopened to all traffic.

1:55 p.m.: The Colorado State Patrol trooper involved in a crash Monday, Aug. 10 near the Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnels was airlifted to a nearby hospital and is expected to recover, according to a news release sent at 1:36 p.m.

The crash involved four vehicles, including the patrol vehicle and a Subaru Forester carrying an elderly couple.

According to a preliminary investigation, the trooper, a K9 handler, had parked on the right shoulder of eastbound Interstate 70 near mile marker 215 when he heard over the radio that a crash had occurred in the westbound lanes. The trooper activated the patrol car’s emergency lights and began turning left across the eastbound lanes. The Subaru traveling in the left eastbound lane then struck the driver’s door of the patrol vehicle. Both vehicles crossed the center median and struck two vehicles traveling westbound — a white Chevrolet work truck and a white GMC Sierra, according to Colorado State Patrol.

The driver and passenger of the Subaru were transported by ground to a nearby hospital. Their injuries weren’t immediately known, according to state patrol. The drivers of both pickup trucks were uninjured.

The trooper’s K9, Buck, was transported to a nearby veterinary clinic as a precaution.

The crash remains under investigation by the Colorado State Patrol Vehicular Crimes Unit. Anyone who witnessed the crash or has additional information has been asked to contact Colorado State Patrol dispatch at 303-239-4501 and reference case number VC260276.

Traffic delays are still expected in the area between Silverthorne around mile marker 205 and the intersection of Interstate 70 and Colorado Highway 6 near mile marker 216. Westbound traffic is being diverted onto Loveland Pass, according to COTrip.org, where live updates can be monitored.

1:15 p.m.: Interstate 70 remains closed between Silverthorne and the Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnels.

The Summit Stage bus system’s Facebook page posted around 12:40 p.m. in a community group that all routes between Silverthorne and Frisco should expect “severe delays,” including flyer routes. As of 1:05 p.m., cameras along I-70 show eastbound traffic backed up for about 2 miles between Silverthorne and Frisco.

12:30 p.m.: A Summit County Alert around 11:50 a.m. stated both directions of I-70 will be closed at the tunnels “until further notice.” COTrip.org, as of 12:40 p.m., states both directions of the interstate are closed between the east entrance to the tunnels and Exit 205 near Silverthorne.

All traffic in both directions is being diverted onto U.S. Highway 6 over Loveland Pass, according to COTrip. The road closure is due to safety concerns, the website stated.

11:45 a.m.: A Colorado State Patrol trooper was involved in a crash on Interstate 70 near the Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnels around 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 10, prompting closures in both directions.

A Colorado State Patrol representative said at least three to four vehicles, including a patrol vehicle, were involved in the crash. The trooper was being transported from the scene as of around 11:38 a.m.

The extent of the trooper’s injuries remains unknown. A flight for life helicopter was sent to the scene, according to the Clear Creek Sheriff’s Office.

Westbound I-70 remains closed at mile marker 215, about 8 miles east of the Dillon area, according to CoTrip.org. The tunnel is also closed, with eastbound traffic stopped beginning around mile marker 205, according to a message from Summit County Alert.

Colorado State Patrol said both directions of I-70 through the tunnels will remain closed while the crash is addressed and hasn’t yet specified an estimated reopening time. Traffic is being detoured over U.S. Highway 6 via Loveland Pass.

Colorado State Patrol plans to release additional information about the crash later on Monday.
