China's strongest typhoon of 2026 has churned more than 6,000 km inland, flooding Hubei cities, grounding hundreds of flights, and pushing Beijing toward its highest flood emergency.
Typhoon Dolphin turned onshore toward central China on Tuesday and brought heavy rain to parts of Hubei province, prompting emergency responses in Beijing, where authorities had issued warnings of more rain.
Although the storm weakened to tropical depression level before making landfall in Zhejiang on Aug. 9, it managed to retain enough moisture to create a risk of dangerous rain several hundred miles off the coast.
Dolphin's inland impact illustrates why a tropical cyclone can remain a major weather threat after losing its strongest winds. As the system moved across China, its circulation interacted with moisture and terrain, producing heavy rainfall across areas including Hubei, Henan and Beijing. Authorities have warned of flooding and landslides as rainfall continues.
Dolphin's Path across ChinaChinese meteorological authorities say that on Aug. 9, the storm hit land in eastern Zhejiang as a tropical storm with maximum sustained winds of 42 meters per second, or approximately 151 kilometers an hour, according to Reuters. At the time of landfall, it was the worst tropical cyclone ever to occur over China in 2026.
Before reaching China, Dolphin affected Japan's Okinawa prefecture, where six people were injured, and more than 50,000 buildings lost power, Reuters reported. After crossing into China, the storm brought heavy rain, strong winds and widespread transportation disruptions.
The storm had traveled more than 6,000 kilometers before reaching China, according to Reuters. Its long track and large circulation helped carry moisture well inland even after the system weakened.
Flooding Spreads into HubeiHubei has become one of the areas facing the greatest inland flood risk. In Xiangyang, water levels at 35 reservoirs had exceeded flood-control thresholds as of Tuesday morning, prompting authorities to relocate 9,705 people, Reuters reported.
The flooding also disrupted infrastructure and tourism. Twenty-six high-risk construction projects were suspended, while major tourist destinations, including the Three Gorges Dam area in Yichang, were temporarily closed.
The risk is being compounded by Hubei's terrain. As Dolphin's moisture moved over the province's mountainous western areas, rising air helped intensify rainfall, according to meteorological officials cited by Reuters. Neighboring Henan was also forecast to receive very heavy rainfall, with some areas potentially receiving several hundred millimeters.
Beijing Braces for Heavy RainDolphin's remnants also reached the Beijing area, where authorities raised flood-control measures as heavy rain affected parts of the capital and surrounding districts.
In Beijing's Shunyi district, flooding partially submerged vehicles and buses. Hourly rainfall reached 88.5 millimeters, according to Reuters. Four districts activated their highest-level flood response measures as forecasts indicated that the city could receive a substantial share of its annual rainfall within 24 hours.
The threat extends beyond urban flooding. Authorities have warned of flash floods and landslides, particularly in mountainous areas around the capital, where saturated ground can increase the risk of slope failures.
Dolphin's influence is therefore no longer primarily a wind story. The principal concern has shifted to rainfall accumulation, river and reservoir levels, urban drainage and the possibility of secondary hazards such as landslides.
Shanghai Disruptions Showed the Storm's ReachDolphin's effects were already being felt hundreds of kilometers from its landfall point.
Shanghai experienced severe transportation disruptions as the storm's rainbands affected the city. More than 900 flights were canceled at Pudong and Hongqiao airports on Monday, while several metro lines were suspended, according to the Associated Press. About 760,000 people were evacuated across affected areas as authorities prepared for flooding and other hazards.
The disruption followed extensive preparations along China's eastern coast. Before landfall, authorities had relocated residents from vulnerable areas, suspended some construction activity and restricted transportation in areas exposed to strong winds, flooding and landslides.
Why the Storm Still Matters After WeakeningA tropical cyclone does not have to have typhoon-force winds to bring about dangerous weather. Tropical systems typically weaken in strength as they move onshore, but can still carry significant amounts of tropical moisture.
That moisture can become particularly significant when it encounters mountainous terrain or interacts with existing weather systems. In Dolphin's case, the resulting rainfall has become the main hazard as the system moves toward central and northern China.
The path of the storm also shows that there is a distinction between storm classification and the actual damage the storm did. Dolphin weakened to a tropical depression, but the downgrade didn't take away the threat of flooding or landslides.
Climate Context Requires CautionDolphin comes amid a broader pattern of damaging extreme-weather events in China and across East Asia. However, a single storm cannot by itself establish that climate change caused a particular rainfall or typhoon event.
Researchers have determined that a warmer atmosphere will be able to retain more water and that warming oceans can affect the intensity of tropical cyclones and precipitation. Event attribution is needed to estimate the contribution of climate change to Dolphin.
The same caution applies to claims linking Dolphin directly to the El Niño climate pattern. Such a connection should not be presented as fact without analysis from meteorological agencies or climate researchers.
Flood and Landslide Risks Persist as Dolphin WeakensChinese officials are still tracking the rains, rivers and reservoirs as the remnants of Dolphin spread through central and northern parts of China. Heavy rains are forecast to continue in various provinces, maintaining high flood and landslide hazard despite the weakening of the storm.
The last stage of Dolphin's evolution is thus not the storm's peak winds, but the amount of rain its circulation can still produce, and how fast the rain can be absorbed, drained, or contained safely in Beijing and other inland regions.
