Time is running out to apply for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work in one of the coolest places on Earth.

The Australian Antarctic Program has launched its annual recruitment drive for more than 300 qualified staff to work at its three scientific research stations and onboard RSV Nuyina for the 2026–27 season.

A diverse range of jobs is available, from tradies of all varieties, chefs, aircraft ground operators, and scientists to telecommunications, IT, station leaders, and even doctors.

Base salary and additional allowances start from $218,131 when working in Antarctica.

Former Northern Territory Fire and Emergency Services Commissioner Andy Warton swapped Darwin's 35C humidity for blizzard temperatures as low as minus 30C and 200 km/h winds during his current stint as a leader at Casey Station.

'Antarctica tests you – physically, mentally, emotionally. But the rewards are incredible,' he said.

'It's a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. You'll make friendships that last for decades, and you'll see and experience things that you would have never imagined.

'The work is hard and the isolation takes some getting used to, but I feel an enormous amount of pride in being a part of Australia's Antarctic mission.'

As his nine-month stint nears its end, Mr Warton said he'll never forget the unique experience.

“In terms of the actual environment, what you see down here is next level – it's like walking through a David Attenborough documentary,” he told news.com.au.

“At the end of the day, you do what you do in Antarctica when it needs to be done.”

Mr Warton urged those interested to speak to their loved ones and family about being separated from them for up to a year and to keep applying if they're unsuccessful the first time.

Applicants will go through an extensive recruitment process and must be technically proficient in their field.

They also need to be willing to adapt to small-community living and indoor confinement for extended periods due to the harsh conditions.

“There's an extensive recruitment process to find the right candidates,” expeditioner services director Gina Woodward said.

“This is an opportunity that most people can only dream of, to become an Australian Antarctic expeditioner. With that opportunity comes enormous responsibility.”

Contracts are available from four months right up to 12-plus months.
