It was certainly a much closer result than anyone expected, so give credit to the Americans for pushing up to the very end.

But when that end came, it was Team Europe retaining the Ryder Cup at 15-13.

Tonight, the Americans will be left scratching their heads and wondering where they might go from here.

Meanwhile, Europe will be turning Long Island into their own paradise with celebrations lasting long into the night.

Even now, while Team Europe is conducting their post-match press conference, the sounds of their fans chanting outside the media center can be clearly heard. That sound will carry across the Atlantic when Luke Donald brings the trophy home.

If we're "Monday Morning Quarterbacking" this situation, there's a lot you can poke holes into with this result:

• Selecting Bradley to be captain, when he's in the middle of a career resurgence and had a strong 2025, seems to be the wrong move now. Having him on the course this week may have helped (but who's to say).
• Bradley's choices in sending Morikawa and English back out seems mind-boggling now. Having Griffin sit all of Saturday is confusing too.
• But in the end, the American's best players were nowhere near good enough. Scheffler went 0-4 in team play. DeChambeau went 1-3. Three golfers (English, Morikawa, Henley) all finished with less than one point.
• America has 4 of the top 5 golfers in the world per the OWGR. All 4 competed at Bethpage. Scheffler finished 1-4-0, Henley went 0-2-1, Schauffele was the best American this week at 3-1-0 and Thomas struggled to 2-2-0.
• All of this points to the fact that Team USA feels rudderless now. Haven't won the cup since 2021. Haven't won on foreign soil since 1993. If the trend continues at Ardare Manor, then the American's next best chance will be in 2029 at Hazeltine.

"I've got a real weird relationship with this tournament. A lot of heartbreak. But I still love it, and I love the guys. I love being out here again. I don't know if I'll ever get to do this again.

I'll remember this the rest of my life."

Hard to blame him, or even make fun of him for this. On the day he was getting set to compete, he had that chance pulled from him. I think anyone who has ever played sports can relate to that.

Here's what he said: "Yeah, it was tough. I know Viktor is hurt. He sent me a text. He came up to me, and I know he's hurt. The rule is what it is; hopefully they'll look at it at some point, but it sucked not going out there and playing today. But it is what it is, and I was part of the crowd today and contributed as much as I could."

"I'd say probably at 1:15 or so. I was kind of about ready to start my warmup, and they told me that I'm not playing today. I told them at the beginning of the week, I was like, if you want me to play one match, if you want me to play five matches, I'm going to do whatever you tell me to do. I was on the other side of it today, and man, it was unbelievable watching these guys fight, and glad I got to do it."

English added: "It's way more stressful watching golf than actually playing golf. I could feel every shot with the guys and wanted Russ [Henley] to make that putt so bad on 18. It is what it is. But I'm happy for their fight, and we were ready to play today, and we'll see what happens."
