Serena Williams is one step closer to her 24th Grand Slam win after taking down Simona Halep in straight sets in the quarter finals on Tuesday night. 

Williams - wearing her eye-catching one-legged catsuit - made easy work of the Romanian, taking out the match 6-6, 6-3 on Rod Laver Arena.

The World No. 10 will go on to play World No.3 Naomi Osaka on Thursday for a spot in the final. 

Williams, who is edging one step closer to a 24th Grand Slam victory, has now won ten of her 12 career meetings with Romanian Halep. 

The match-up comes after Williams defeated Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 on Sunday.

'I am happy to get through that one,' Williams said after the grueling fourth round encounter. 

Williams has seven Australian Open titles - her last win was in 2017 just months before giving birth to her first child. 

The 39-year-old's coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, said despite not needing validation, Williams has her eye on winning more Grand Slams. 

'But, I mean, clearly she came back to tennis to win some other grand slams, so that's for sure the goal,' he said.

'Now, she's not as obsessed with the 24 (as) most of the people in the tennis world, but definitely she wants to win grand slams. That's the only reason why she came back to tennis.'

Halep, a two-time major winner, has never won a title at Melbourne Park but was an Open semi-finalist last year and runner-up in 2018.
